My New Rubi I am still working on. My 03' (Which I sold in a fit of weakness ) was pretty sweet. Spent alot of money on, but was offered a great price that would allow me to start all over again and learn from the mistakes of my old project. It was a very Sad day for me. Guys some serious advice, never sell a Jeeper you have spent alot of time on, like most of you have. It will put a void in your heart like you wouldn't believe.

Neil,

Your 7" of lift and 4.88 gears seem like a lot for your tire size. Is there another benefit here that I'm missing? What RPM's are you pulling on the highway?

No, you are really sharp. (Dead Serious) Alot of people wouldn't catch that, specifically myself. That was one of the reasons I ended up parting with it. I overdid the modifications and ruined it's ability to reach higher speeds without winding out the engine. I ended up using it soley for weekend off-roading and my short trips to Frt Carlton. This Meant I had to use my wifes 2003 maxima, which I found out rather quickly, and much to my wifes dismay, that a Maxima does not curb jump nearly as well as my Rubi did. Wife was sore that A) I now f**ked up two cars. B) I spent an assload of money on my Jeeper that I could only use on short trips. and C) Every other day, a bunch of the guys on base would take offroading trips up near Cheyenne to the HumV Displacement course (basically the most wicked ass off road trail the Special Forces could construct). She got wise to my new found "training schedule" rather quickly. But I saw one of you guys in a Bagland pic. I can't remember which one of you it was, but if you are an officer with clearance or attached with any of our Units (I was ranger 3rd). I believe you can gain access to this training facility. I have been out of the Military for 2 months now (doing Mil. Consulting with Grom. North. ), but I believe they are still pretty lenient on the use of the Facility. But I should stress unless you have put at least a 5 inch liftand a decent set of mudders with a better than stock suspension, I would go with one of the HV's. I almost snapped my axle, and that was on one of the more easy routes through the 4 mile course.

I have a 05 with the 4speed auto. With 35's and 4.88 gears it put me right back to stock, maybe slighlty lower geared at about 1800 rpms at 55mph. You are running a 315(a true 35) which is slightly taller than my 35's(34.5"). I dont really understand how you could have been overgeared with 4.88 gears and 315 tires unless you had a 3speed auto or something. With a OD you should have been right back to stock specs or very close to it.

That's a nice looking Rubi. Man I wish they were out when I bought my Unlimited in 2004. However, I adore my rig and can't imagine riding trails without it.

As far as your questions goes.
On a 5 speed Rubicon, 4.88s make it really peppy and give it some good 5th gear power especially on hills. The pic Neil stole is one where I had the AiROCK Up about 3/4 of it's travel range which is why there is alot of space in the wheel wells. At 70mph with 315s and 4.88s I used to turn ~2800 rpms which is very streetable

With 37" tires, to get back to the same ratios as stock, you would need 4.90 gears, so 4.88s are almost perfect. Offroad with the 37s and 4.88s gears, tho, I use a little more clutch that I had to with the 35s but it works alot better than when I had 35s and the stock gears.

This is the Mustang I traded in for the LJ...yes, I had two. I was a bit obsessed. The 67' was actually great in the snow with the 200ci inline 6. The 3.7 liter 00' was crap in the winter. I couldn't take anothe winter in that vehicle, so I traded up.

elff, I see what you mean about the lift and gears. 4.88's would be perfect for 35's with the 5spd. I'm thinking about 4.56's for mine, with the hope of replacing my 33's with 35's, but she's an auto.
