Jeeps are a unique vehicle, but definitely not worth the extra dough. EXTRA DOUGH??? My LJ was the least expensive new car/truck that I've ever purchased...no contest!!! Sounds like you should sell the Jeep and buy a Vespa...it's only going to cost you $1500 or so, and will get 80 MPG. It has everything.... Convertible (sort of...) Great Gas Mileage "Sporty" Handling -and lastly- Chicks Dig Guys on "Choppers"

Is it an unlimited? What color is it? Is it Manual or AT?
If it's an unlimited with Manual and Cruise, I'll give you 12,500 for it, sight unseen. Unless it is white or yellow, then I'll only give you 10k, because I'll have to paint it... Not a good enough price? Just think of all the money you'll save on gas with your nice new suzuki sidekick.
Sorry, but it is a jeep and if you bought it based on a salesman's pitch, it's your bad.

I got my first Jeep less than 3 weeks ago ;D. I love it. I have had a Lincoln Navigator, 15 mpg got us home through 14 inch snowfall unusuall for Oklahoma. A Ford Ranger 400,000 miles plus @ 20 mpg and the Unlimited. I also currently have a Ford Escape which gets about 25 mpg which has automatic 4 wheel drive. No switchs no control. I like the Jeep better, I can see better and it feels better. First milage check is 18.8 mpg mix of city and highway driving. Highway is turnpike speed in Okla. or 75 mph which sucks gas like mad. Cant wait to go off road. Cant believe 55 mph at 1200 rpm.

true, gas mileage stinks in a jeep. . . I'm getting around 11-14 in the city, but that also includes a 5-10 minute warm up at a whopping 0 MPG averaged in from the auto-start. I also have been doing a lot of "a-hole" driving techniques due to early morn commute, so my revs get up to about 28/2900 sometimes. I think there's a few things you need to do to improve your situation.
1. go to a different gas station (stay consistent).
2. check air filter, o2 sensors.
3. take it out of 4wd and double check that it's in 2wd
4. if you drive like a granny, you may want to get her out on the highway and let'er rip once in a while. A proper break in is done in around 10k with varying the RPM's while driving - starting with slight variations, then as it breaks in more variations (brand new - 800- 2100. 5k - 800 -3200+). this will smooth the piston chamber walls and piston rings to the point of least resistance (less friction = better mileage) which brings me to my next point.
5. Reduce friction of moving parts. i.e. Properly inflate tires, switch to synthetic oil (i gained 1-2 mpg, non placebo) make sure trans fluid is topped, etc.
these are all easy and you can pick and choose what you want to do, but I think there's one thing that we will all agree that you MUST do:
~~~~~GO TO A DIFFERENT DEALERSHIP~~~~~
that alone will save you more money than the lost gas mileage many times over. my hint would have been them asking if I wanted to trade in my new car, but some are more trusting than others. Where do you live rich? maybe someone here can make a suggestion.
we all know it's hard, but as NWquad said, it's not that big of a deal for most of us. and as long as you don't throw more money into the problem with snake oil products, you'll get used to it. and it won't be that big of a problem for you.
On the other hand. if you really hate the LJ and want to dump it on someone, take up an ad in the paper or put it on ebay. don't trade in by any means - you'll just see it in the dealership lot for 21k the next day. and it WILL sell for around 18/19k because it's a new jeep and it's cheap.
I just did a search on AutoTrader.com and the cheapest 04-05 Automatic Wrangler Unlimiteds that I found in the entire country were as follows (cheapest first; year-mileage-price-roof): 2004-16,213-$17,455-Soft Top 2004-30,491-$17,975-Hard Top 2004-14,301-$17,995-Hard Top 2005-599-$17,999-Hard Top
If your stealer offered you $12,000, then he lowballed you by about $6,000 on the cheapest Unlimited listed in the country. NADA lists the 2004 base Unlimited with 10,000 miles at $18,500 average trade-in and $21,250 as average retail; add $650 trade-in, $725 retail for hard top. I'd suggest that you put those figures in your head and the stealer out of your life. He is only there to make money off of you. He is NOT your friend.
You know, I am not usually one to jump on a pile on, but Rich, you are producing some negatives vibes, man.
I had to figure out the gas mileage myself before deciding to buy. This is what I figured.
Jeep has a 19 gallon tank. I drive 300 miles a week or 1200 a month or 14,400 a year.
The current cost of gas where I live is $2.02 x 19 gallons and it is about $38.38 but let's call it $40.
I am guessing 15 MPG to the tank (I don't know about the 8 MPG thing, that sounds abnormal).
15 x 19 = 285 Miles per tank. 1200/285 a month equals 4.2 fill ups a month. 4.2 x $40 equals $168 in gas a month.
Now let's say, I go ahead and tuck my junk between my legs and head on down the the local Kia dealership with gas mileage in mind. I get a car that averages 25 MPG and a 19 gallon tank.
25 x 19 = 475 Miles per tank. 1200/475 a month equals 2.5 fill ups a month. 2.5 x $40 equals $100 in gas a month.
So in the long run I save $68 a month or since I get paid bi-monthly, $34 a paycheck. Considering I would pay $400 for a new front bumper because I OWN A JEEP, that is not so bad. But if I did get that extra $34 a paycheck or $17 a week, I could use that extra money to go the movies by myself in my cute little Kia whatever with enough left over to go by Walgreens to pick up some tissues as I cry myself to sleep at night.
Not worth the extra dough? Are you crazy? I have drank more than that in extra dough and all I had to show for it was a bad hangover and the need to use the bathroom really bad. At least now, I can cure the hang over by driving with the top down to the local liquor store to get more beer.
Come on Rich, this site is for talking about sharing stories about rigs not a complaint department or support group. Are you sure you are not friends with coloradojeeper?
look, im simply expressing how bad my vehicle depreciated in 6 months and the fact that im getting 8 mpg with this damn thing. Im not trying to create negative vibes, im just not satisfied with the unlimited. my 95 wrangler s was much cheaper to run. i miss that vehicle. it was a 4 banger but it never let me down. unfortunately it was stolen and never recovered. so yes, im a jeep guy, i just dislike these unlimiteds.
how are you figuring the mileage? maybe they put in a rubi speedo gear when they rebuilt your jeep. - what are you commutes like? how loaded is the jeep? what are your rpm's at different speeds? do you use cruise? give us a little more info and we may be able to help. little things help a lot - making sure the gas cap is TIGHT. taking out the back seat when not in use if able. turning off the defrost (which default turns on A/C). spark plugs gapped correctly, wires tightly connected. have you tried any of these? one thing I've realized is that typing on a keyboard has absolutely no correlation to your gas mileage, so you can rule that out as a problem or a solution . in our big snowstorm over here I got around 7-8mpg, but I was in 4wd and was havin fun blastin through the snow. if all else fails, go to a different dealer and express your concern with them, because if you are burning excess fuel, you're cat won't be able to eat all the smog and eventually you'll fail emissions or rust out your exhaust or even carbon up your valves.
" i just dislike these unlimiteds."
This is where I think most people here are a bit perplexed. I don't think anyone would argue that you should go with what you think is best, and that is increasingly something else. Sell it or trade it in... nothing is worth the headache.
I don't really understand what you are trying to get from this forum Rich. You have obivously had a bad run of things with Jeeps in general, and with your Unlimited specifically. The "I'm not against Jeeps, just this one" stuff sounds hollow and it is coming across more and more that you are hanging around soaking up the attention, whether it is positive or negative. If you are truly unhappy, list your Jeep privately to get the most for it, and Join www.kia-forums.com/
