Hi folks, hope everyone is having a good holiday season. These Jeeps suck on gas bigtime. I am getting 8 city the past 2 weeks. Horrible. If i would hae known this, I would have bought a damn car. They are fun to drive, but im starting to question if its worth the expense to own this damn thing. Not to mention, they have depreciated bigtime. Trade in value on a 2004 jeep wrangler unlimited is 12000.00 Horrible. Rich

When it all comes down to it, does gas mileage really matter that much?? I get 13 mpg in mine no matter where I drive it. If I had a full sized truck I'd be about the same. If I had a mid-sized truck like a Ranger I'd be getting about 17 mpg. So...say you drive 15000 miles in a year....that's about 1150 gallons in the Jeep and 882 gallons in the small truck....roughly 270 gallons stretched out over 12 months...that about 23 gallons a month at around $2.50/gallon (being way conservative here)... So, your monthly expendature on gas goes up by around $50-$60 (depending on how much you pay for gas). In the grand scheme of things $50 or $60 per month isn't really that much...and that is IF you actually are driving 15,000 miles per year... It's really not that big of a deal. Now if you were going from a Jeep to say a hybrid car with higher than average gas mileage it may make a difference...BUT, how many years of better mileage would it take to offset the higher price of the new car, and how much money you'd lose on your trade in??? Anyway....that's my

Please stop complaining. If you had researched your purchase, you would have known about the gas mileage.
Any vehicle will have at least 25 - 30% depreciation in the first year, and then 15 - 20 % in the second. If it wasn't that much, the used marketplace would be greatly overpriced, and used items would never sell.
Everyone would spend the little extra for the new one - Would you buy a used Jeep if it was only a few thousand less than a brand new one?
I didn't think so
Do what I did, buy a Volkswagen Golf for a commuter, and take the Jeep on the nice days, and when you want to smile on your way to work.

I kinda agree on the "well, it's a Jeep" addage..
.. but 8 is kinda low?
Had it been getting better mileage? Has anything changed- like:
extreme cold & or lots of snow bigger tires- did you change the odometer? regearing - did you change the odometer?
etc etc

I think to sum it all up it is a JEEP thing and I guess that you don't understand I drive mine everyday and around town I get a lot better then 8 miles per gallon, my average for around town with some hwy is 14-16 mpg and this is a LJ with 4:10 gears 31 in tires and 6 speed. It is a Jeep and is not made to get 50 mpg, but it will get the same millage no matter what direction you point it to go.

What is this ''fuel mileage'' you speak of ? As far as not holding there value......I think it is just the oppisite.......jeeps hold there value well. Go and try to buy an 04 unlimited for 12,000. dollars...I don't think you could even come close.

i tried to unload this piece of crap today and the dealer didnt even want the damn thing because he is sitting on new 2006 that nobody wants either. He offered me 12k for mine and it only has 8 thousand miles on it. More bad news folks, interest rates on used cars are shooting up in january, which means the values could drop even more. by spring this piece of crap could be worth no more than 10 thousand dollars. Lame. very lame

Maybe you should put it up for sale on this site. May you could get a litte more $$$, than trading it in.

Well Rich, I don't know....8 MPG is half of what I get in an also stock 2005 LJ. So either you've got bad gas or somethings f'd on your rig.
Personally, it's been said on here several times, and I've usually kept my mouth shut, but simply you haven't liked your Jeep since you got it at least how you've posted indicate this. Add that to the string of bad luck you seem to have developed after getting it (seriously, still can't believe ANYone having that bad of luck) and here you are on the 'Unlimited Jeep' forums bad mouthing the Jeep again. I am sorry man....I just simply don't understand what you hope to accomplish...
Seems like:
A> You did no research when you bought it (Mileage, Value, Break-In rating, Etc...) B> You expected WAY to much out of it... C> You then did no research on selling it...(ie: how to best sell a 2 year old low mileage vehicle - Clue: Don't use as a trade in) D> Have no idea about car values over time...(nfunlimited summed it up VERY well) E> Don't seem to understand that dealers don't give actual car values for trade ins (always under) and their goal is to get as much 'profit' as possible.
Sorry...that's my thoughts and I'll go back to keeping quiet. This shouldn't become a Rich Flame fest, but then you go out and ask for it sometimes...

When i bought this damn thing i never dreamed i would only get 8mpg in the city. im sorry but thats unacceptable for any vehicle. it stinks. secondly, these boats are only going for 16k retail(2004 unlimited). Thats the truth. I wouldnt buy another jeep wrangler unlimited. They are ok, but definnitely not worth the expense. Show me a nice car with a comfy ride. Jeeps are a unique vehicle, but definitely not worth the extra dough.

I am not going to crack on you personally , but you did buy a Jeep and with that you now have a vehicle that can do a whole lot more than drive back in forth to the store and work. It is a a ride that you can take just about anywhere you want anytime you chose to do so. If I were you I would have the Jeep looked at because 8 mpg does not sound right and it is not par with what other LJ owners are getting. When I bought my LJ I knew that mpg was not going to be a strong selling point, but the ownership of a Jeep and the friends that you make are well worth the difference, my .05 cents worth.

Something has to be wrong. There is no way you could get 8 MPG on a regular basis. I have a lift and 32's and I still average 13-14 MPG. As for the dealer, he wanted to sell you another vehicle earlier this year. His offering you 12K is theft, if you take it. Look on Ebay just do any search and you will find that 17-18K is about the average people are asking for stock 04's. I have been watching for my son in law. Take it to another dealer and get it checked out. As for mileage ratings from Jeep, they tell the same story as all the car manufactures do. No one gets anywhere near the mileage they advertise. I just watched a program on the hybrid cars. They get no where near there advertised mileage either. Jeep Wranglers hold their value better then most vehicles. Most 2000 Sports with 100K + miles they are still asking 12K for. I hate to say it Rich, but maybe you aren't a Jeep guy, nothing wrong with that. If you get desperate put it up for sale here and see what you can get.
