anyone got pics of how to remove the beam restrictor in the OEM foglights, also before/after shots would be appreciated. I don't want to take stuff of I don't need to

I don't have pics but found when I did mine that this mod changed some with the change in fogs for the 2005+ models.
On my 2005 I just:
- undid the three screws around the back of the fog, - unpluged the light, - used a small flathead screwdriver to move the reflector until it popped off - pryed up the three tabs that hold the light assembly to the glass - popped off the light assembly - easily removed the reflector (The reflector wouldn't come out otherwise)... - put it all back together...
Now it's much brighter. On my 2005, the reflector actually covered about 2/3rds of the lightbulb...what a waste of good light!!!!!!

I did this over the summer - I did notice a big difference. It is much brighter, but does not give much distance - mostly brighter in front and just outside of the front wheels. I used a needle-nosed pliers to do most of the work - as stated above, bend the tabs to remove the glass, then take out the reflector (I used a little force and tore the little tabs that keep the reflector on, but it probably can be done without damaging them, if you care) Here are a couple of pics I snapped when I removed the reflector. It is during the day, but you will still notice a difference (driver's side is removed, other is not).

Yup...I didn't damage my tabs here...Luckily as I never seem to do anything perfectly... LOL

Any difference in fog?
What does this reflector do?
Does the lamp base heat up with the reflector removed?

Just a slight difference in fog - probably worse than with the reflector. The "reflector" doesn't really reflect. It is a small piece of metal that sits in front of the bulb to keep direct light from exiting the light. We should actually refer to it as a deflector. It is made of unpolished, black metal (doesn't reflect light). The idea is to direct the light with the mirror reflector at the back of the light and not have the "uncontrolled" light direct from the bulb. Here are some crappy drawings to help demonstrate. Stock, the deflector (the part you remove) covers the front of the bulb, only allowing light to reflect off the rear reflector cup. After the deflector is removed, light emits directly from the bulb as well as reflecting off the rear reflector cup. Less bright, more directed light is probably better in fog. This mod makes a big difference on the trail or road without fog - it lights up 10+ ft on each side of the rig. This complements the headlights a little better since it widens the range of light in front of you.

Those drawings deserve at least on Karma point. Well done.

Removing the deflector just makes your fogs into driving lights right? Living in a fog prone area (I had to use them just yesterday) I think I'll stick with the fogs

In the fog you want to light the road, not the fog - they will still do that, just brighter (which isn't always better in fog).

I made this "adjustment" yesterday and found it very simple and made a noticable improvement. Even my wife thought it was an improvement, and she rarely sees the fogs on.
The beam is still very flat, and doesn't go more than about 15 yards beyond the front of the Jeep.

Alright, you have me convinced. I just put this one on my list, right below the mod that keeps the Fogs on with the brights. I saw a great write up on that one on JU, and can't find it anymore.

Chris, here is one writeup I found: www.getahelmet.com/jeeps/tech/fogrelay/I've been wanting to do this too.
