I am still new to the whole thing and still pretty clueless as to what any of you are talking about in this thread when it comes to the mechanical side. I plan to become an expert real soon though, but please forgive my ignorance for right now. The one thing I do understand is price though. I was looking at this website: www.rocky-road.com/jeepbudget.htmland it was talking about a "budget lift" for about $150 or so which will add about 3" without having to change anything. Is that really all that it will take or is there always the need for re-gearing and all the other stuff that goes along with lifting and adding larger tires? Also how hard is it to do on your own? I have some limited mechanical skills but access to an auto shop. I would rather start learning this stuff on my own than taking it to a professional. Thanks!

If you are going with a budget boost, 2" is about as tall as you will want to go. 3" and greater, and yo uare automatically looing at putting on new shocks. Throw some 31's or 32'2 under there and call it a day. You can choose to put on longer travel shocks, but it isn't absolutely necessary with 2".
I plan to replace my shocks with longer travel ones when they get close r to wearing out. If you have access to the post auto shop, you can do all the work with the help of a buddy for around $100-$250 (depending on what kit you go with.) You will definitely want an alignment done, and want to make sure your wheels are balanced well, as larger tires tend to be harder to balance, and the effects are more noticable.
You will not notice a huge difference in power with 31's over 30's, but it is there. With the 3.73 gears, I wouldn't want to go over 32's...and even that would be a stretch. I dont' want the Auto to downshift when going up a slight grade.

You could do a 2" Budget Boost with a 1" Body Lift and run 33's. A budget boost will probably only take 3 hrs at maximum even with no experience doing lifts. Very easy to install and I'm sure if you need help there are hundreds of people that have installed budget boosts before. Here is a pic of my last jeep with a Budget Boost. I will tell you this.......Once you put the Budget boost on your gonna want more!

Wilcav, I installed mine in about 4 hours by myself in my driveway - could have been quicker but I had an accident when one of the springs got hung up, when I released it I was reminded that it is called a "spring" for a reason!!! But, to answer your question, it is a very easy install with or without the longer shocks. The best instructions can be found at www.4x4xplor.com/REBB.html - this guy explains everything in perfect detail. You do not need anything else in order to install this lift other than the spacers, some socket wrenches {the instructions even give you the sizes you need for each bolt - how cool is that!!}, a good full height floor jack and some solid jack stands. Pop on the new tires, take it in for an alignment and you are done. But, wv4x4 is right, once you get it up in the air your mind starts wondering "hmmm, maybe a body lift and 33's would look better...."

Yes. you can change the gear ratio without changing the carrier/lockers. Not sure. Depends on location. Could be anywhere between $200-$600 for labor without the gears and install kits.

Hello, Great Site!!
I have a 05 Rubicon Unlimited and want to get a basic lift like a RE 2" BB just to get away from complete stock look. Will the RE 2" BB work with the rubicon unlimited? If so I know it comes with DT3000 Shocks. I know first hand DT are great as i have em on my GC. Anyway, the place where i would be ordering the lift gives a choice of upgrading the shocks to either Black Diamond AT shock or Superlift Superide Shocks for and additional $19 or OME Shocks for $100 more on the kit price. Im not familiar with these other shocks so do not know if its worth the extra cash to upgrade. This is my daily driver so I want to keep at least the same ride or better not harsher....any help appreciated. Thanks Jeff

I don't think you will have any complaints about any of those shocks. I would stick with the ones that come with the RE kit. That is just my though.

The shocks are just fine, (and silver!), and would be a lot better than Superlift or Black Diamond IMO. And I wouldn't spend the extra $100 on OME's. Great shock BUT, shoots the price of the BB significantly up. ryan
