I had a terrible noise coming from my engine bay the other day so i took it in to the dealer - they finally found it and claim it's the distributor cap. I was under the impression that we don't have dist caps with the electronic ignition. . . . i'd look at it, but i don't have a jeep here right now to look at. anyone help out? are they trying to feed me a line?

I would ask them to clarify what they are saying. My 2000 TJ dosen't even have a distributor cap in it.The 2006 LJ either. The spark plugs are fired by individual coil packs.

I just did a search of the 2468 pages of the 2005 LJ service manual, searching for the words "distributor cap". The term appears only once as a generic reference on how to remove spark plug wires from a spark plug or distributor cap.
I suggest you have a talk with the dealer service manager... and get him to show you in the FSM exactly what the part is. Don't hesitate go to another dealer...
Let us know what happens, Good Luck!!

You might want to have your flux capacitor checked as well.
This sounds dubious and I'd love to hear about the final resolution.

I had a loud noise...the dealer told me it was the giggle pin, which they say is bolted to the HaHa shaft.

Ah crap, I hope my giggle pin is OK and I don't even know where the haha shaft is. Must only come with the Rubicon. Looks like it's back to google for me right after I get this blinker fluid changed out (if I can ever figure out where I put that left handed screwdriver).

Crap... I forgot to swap out my summer air in my tires for winter air... no wonder my gas mileage has gone way down since December 21st... Any word on that distributor cap yet??

thanks for the comments guys. I guess the service lady (who has her job based on her looks) has no idea how to read a service order receipt. The real diagnosis was a whining noise coming from the distributor cam sensor housing. An inspection was performed and the oil pump drive gear was replaced. not sure how I ended up breaking that, but what a headache.
thanks again

the oil pump drive gear was replaced. not sure how I ended up breaking that, but what a headache. There was a recall on this for a handful of TJ/LJ built in early 2005 - I'm guessing you have an '05 that was likely built between 12/04 and 4/05. Then again, it sounds like this place may not have read the recall that close and did it no matter when it was manufactured .

At least your service lady was nice to look at. There's an old fella at my dealership.
