Can I just say that I hate powdercoating...or rather every part I've ever bought that has had powdercoating, seems to be done poorly.
Specifically this time, it's my Rock Hard 4x4 front bumper and sliders. (in the past it was olympic 4x4 and Tomken) Sure I noticed a few tiny spots on the sliders, but the front bumper was spotless when I got it.
It's been less than a year and the front bumper has two identical spots where the coating is flaking off both about 150% the size of a deck of cards. It looks like crap and I have had it.
I suppose I'll take the bumper off, sand down the spots and use a rust inhibiting primer paint in black and just leave it that way. Or maybe a little POR15 or a bedliner product.
Anyone had any success with doing this? Will I need to remove all of the powdercoat or can I use it as a touch up as necessary?
TIA,
Chad

I used POR15 on my rear bumper (undercoat, then topcoat) and am very happy. It's been over three years with no bubbling, and I was even able to get a smooth gloss coat on top. It'll still scratch, but it doesn't seem to flake away or bubble like other products.
There's no issue with just using the undercoat, but it'll dull when hit with UV.
The surface prep instructions are on their site. I seem to remember them mentioning that there are no issues over powder coat.

I hate powder coating as well. My first Hanson bumper I got and painted with Rustolium. Looked great till it was smashed. Then the insurance replaced it and all they had was a powdre coated one so I took it. It looks like hell after only one and a half years. My Rockrails I painted with Rustolium also and they still look good after 4 years.

I vote Rustoleum...THe only part that I can think of that i have powder coated is my rear two hook, which has since flaked and peeled. I sanded it down and hit it with some rattle can rusto and viola...two years no issues.
I think I will order any new parts as bare metal and rusto them myself from her on out now that I think of it.

WOW I am surprised you all have had this much trouble with powder coating, I have my rock-rails, and side body armor both powder coated . the rock rails have been on for over two and half years, I have gouged the sides against rocks, and abused the hell out of them and no flaking or pealing ( it did go down to metal with the gouges from rocks but that all) the body armor has been on for only a few months but no problems so far. I do know the shop that did the powder coating for me and the prep work they put it. Over all I am very pleased with powder coating just my two cents
