I tried shifting my 06 Wrangler (auto tranny) into 4H, but there was an awful grinding noise. Suggestions?

Were you in 2H to begin with? Were you rolling or standing still? Give us all the details and we will do our best to help ya!

I was in 2H, in drive holding the break. Should I be at a slow roll?

Try just getting a very very slow roll, just barely moving. Shift the gear shift into neutral and then while still moving change into 4hi. There will be a clunking sound. That is normal, a grinding sounds is not. Once you do it a few times it will be natural.

It's even easier to toss your tranny in neutral - switch to 4hi/lo and then drop it in drive - I've yet to hear why 'not' to do this, and it works every time on mine. In fact, often times it's so hard to get in 4wheel I will park/neutral it just to get there.

Thanks Erin and Money. I shifted into neutral and rolled a bit, went right into 4L, and I went right onto my moms porch. She wasnt too happy.
