A couple of days ago, I stopped by my local Jeep dealer to finally check out the new JK. I saw a soft-top, dark blue Unlimited that looked pretty nice. As I approached, I noticed that it seemed a little different (as well as lower-priced) than a silver one right next to it. As I looked at the sticker, I was shocked to see that it was a 4x2! What's the point of a 2wd Wrangler??!! Kevin

Mall Crawling. The front differential just gets in the way.

I don't know the numbers, but a majority of Jeep Wrangler owners don't ever take their Jeep off the pavement. In California and Florida they love the top-down ride but never need the 4x4. I am sure DCX makes more money on the 2wd version than the 4x4 as well, despite the lower sticker price.
Now I am not crazy about the idea, but it does make good business sense.

A lot of them get sold as rental cars too. I actually ended up with a 2 wheel drive TJ as a rental car in Hawaii back in the late 90's...I was really disappointed, and took it offroad anyway
