A buddy at work finally got the Unlimited Sahara he ordered two months back. Black with tan - very sharp. I have to say it is a nice car.
The Pro's:
The interior is leaps and bounds above the TJ's (not saying much, I know). Little things really add up - like the HVAC vents (they swivel 360 degrees and can shut completely), the center console (no longer just a cheap plastic box), and the gauges (they are awesome in the dark, very crisp - and the temp/compass is in the gauge cluster rather than the mirror). The hard-top is thicker with more insulation between the layers of fiberglass. The ride is hands-down quieter and would compete with any other vehicle in its class with the hard-top on.
The ride was stiff but crisp. The visibility is good (about the same as a TJ) although the windshield feels smaller (hard to believe, eh?). The rear doors make a world of difference getting to the back seat. The rear swing gate is easier to open and close and the handles are easier to use (although not very good looking). There's a lot of room in this thing!
The Con's:
The bumpers are cheap plastic. The rear bumper has a cut-out for the spare (similar to the Liberty), which doesn't appeal to me. The pickup was (IMO) substandard. My buddy got the tow-group which puts the gears at 4:1, but the 4 speed auto just doesn't help the weak V6. Compared to my 6spd manual and the I-6, it just was sluggish. The gas pedal is quite stiff (the TJ's is on the loose side) and it didn't help the sluggish acceleration.
The interior is too nice (IMO) - I would be afraid to get it muddy. The infamous door sill is much smaller (makes it easier to get in, not as good for water crossings).
As I said earlier, its a nice car. Maybe I am turning in to a purist, but it is almost "too nice". I am sure it will be a great performer off-road, and is very comfortable on-road, but it seems very car-like in many aspects. I know many said the same thing back in '97 when the TJ came out, but this one is more revolutionary the evolutionary. Nice, but I don't think one is in my future (maybe it will grow on me).
Ok, I will end my novel. If you guys have any questions, let me know and I can hopefully get them answered. This guy is really geeked about his new TK and would love it if I was checking it out more often, so I will have almost unlimited access to it (at least for a couple of more weeks while I am still at this job).
