I'd still go with the ones that we have come to know and love. I think the "old school" Unlimited is going to wind up having waaaay much more appeal and still remains true to Jeep.
I am not a gear head in any sense of the word, but reading some the stuff that is being posted on Pirate 4x4 about the new Unlimited makes me wonder some. Is this a a cross-over SUV in Jeep's clothing? And the commercials still make me want to throw up. Guess I have to see one first before I call for a change of the site name to something like "WranglerLJ" to filter out the "new school" Unlimiteds.

Frequenting Pirate are we? Dana 60's can only be a few honey-do's away.

Just lurking through Pirate. Gotta admit that it is a fun to watch the unsuspecting posters get flamed for something. Which is why I only go to read. I don't know if I could carry the addiction that far but it is fun to dream anyway.

I wonder, too, if the 2006 Unlimited will be the last "real" jeep as we've known it for all for these years. The grill on the '07 is shorter and more rounded. The lights are positioned differently. The interior is more like a luxury car, although my '06's interior is not much different. The newer jeep also appears to me to be shorter in height, though that may be just an illusion.
The traditional jeep wrangler appearance has always reminded me of old model T's. Not everyone thinks so, but that's what they remind me of. I like the tall cab and the long hood. It's a little nostalgic. So, even though the '07, at least with half doors, appeals to me, I wish the traditional design had not changed quite so much.
I wouldn't have minded having those tires, 4 doors, and hidden storage space, though!

You can imagine some of the same comments from CJ and YJ owners about the TJ. Full metal doors, cruise control, CD player, Subwoofer, ABS, rubber hood latches, etc.
I don't think you should lament too much. The new JK's are Jeeps, and soon we'll all start seeing them pop up on the trails. I look forward to seeing them on the Arizona trails to see what they can do on the rocks.
The things that I can't understand is that cheesy V6 and putting the unprotected muffler in the spot that I always bash on the trail.

I drove an Unlimited Rubicon @ Mancari's in Evergreen Park the other day. It drives great! The engine is not going to cut it though. I'm going to wait until DC puts a V8 in the new Wranglers then, I will think about parting ways with my 05. Likes: Lots of room. Power windows and door locks. Roomier. Does not drive like the TJ's. It seems more stable and less squirrely. Beefed up axles, Rubicon models, (Hi pinion front 44, stronger, larger shafts, etc.) Dislikes: Plastic grill. Obnoxiously large flares. Gas tank & muffler's new locations. The rest of it was different but, in a good way. Change is good and this Wrangler has some things, many Jeep owners have been asking for. Any rig that can run 35's w/ a BB is I think we're going to see a ton of 4 door Wranglers on the road. One reason so many people I talk to don't have a Wrangler is the space restrictions. The Unlimited solves that.

I've been keeping my eye on Burnsville's build. I would definitely take the 6.1L Hemi!!! It amazes me, that these things are just starting to hit the dealerships and already there are engine swaps being done, SA kits & bumpers available, and LA kits that are supposedly going to debut @ SEMA.

We went by a dealer today, on the way to Desert Rat to pick up an Optima battery. So we stopped in to look at their JK. The only one they had was a 2WD model with 22" tires (Eeek!). Almost as an afterthought, I popped the hood. There is a huge gap between the fan and the engine pulleys. Huge. Plenty of room for another cylinder. They have to be planning a hemi option in the future. There is no other reason for all that wasted space. It was like I was looking into a cavern.
One other observation. I kept hitting my head on the rollbar, behind the seats. There is less headroom in this model. Bonnie thought the visibility was better, so the seats must be higher.
