I noted no mention of an unlimited version, which I honestly think the 06 will be it for the unlimited. One thing that rather chaps my hide is the switch to a V engine. I'm glad I got the 06 when I did because (and I know this has been said over and over in the jeep world) they will never be the same with that change. Here's a copy of my diatribe on the subject when I first realized the magnitude of the situation: I've already had a few people mention to me that Jeep is changing the Wrangler next year. It will be larger and redesigned. This will, doubtless, cause much commotion in the Jeep community. When you have a vehicle that has undergone so few changes and been around so long you are bound to have purists that will attest that even mine isn't a "real" Jeep because it has an automatic transmission, seat belts, or some other nonsense.
The "classic" nature of a Jeep Wrangler is one of the main reasons I've always wanted one. The only other vehicle I can think of that is even close in longevity and sticking to the original roots is the Porsche 911 and I have absolutely no desire to purchase one of those. Another main factor in my decision to buy this vehicle was the American made aspect. Yeah I know I can buy a Nissan that is American made and likely several dozen other vehicles but when all of the "I want it" factors add up the sum of the parts is what makes one sign on the dotted line.
Anyway, on the 2007 Wrangler they are getting rid of the inline 6. GETTING RID OF THE INLINE 6 I SAY! Now how can this be? The inline 6 has been a staple of the Wrangler since 1965. The Porsche 911 also uses an inline 6. The benefit of an inline 6, or straight 6 or slant 6 as they are sometimes called is that they are perfectly balanced and require no balance shaft and like Forrest Gump would say, "That's one less thing." They are replacing the tried and true engine with an off the shelf V6. Now I'm not saying there's anything wrong with a V6 but I'll stick with my inline. It may be longer than a typical engine requiring an actual hood on a vehicle but it also runs smoother than butter and produces power like no other. I'll stick with my classic, thanks.

Well reading JP magazine its limiting the '07 Wrangler to the X, Sahara, and rubicon models. The 4.0L is going away, and being replaced with a 230.5ci/3.8L V6 that will make 205hp@5200rpm and 240lb-ft of torgue@ 4000rpm. Diesel will be available for the international market. It will have an Active sway bar system w/ electronic dissconnect. The Xwill get standard 16" rims, and the Sahara & Rubis will run on 17's. THE WRANGLER WILL BE LONGER...(152.8" in lenth compared to the current 150.2; the wheelbase is currently 93.4" and it will be 95.4" in '07)and also wider (73.7 not counting the mirrors;it was 68.3) The windshield will be curved now and still fold down. It will have the sunrider feature. The fender flares will have seperate fender pieces, and available with 4 doors. I quoted a lot out of the magazine, and the unlimited we own will be something very special and demanding in the coming years, and I'm glad I got one!!

Something else they don't speficially mention but really has to happen is the hood will have to be shortened. The V engine will allow it and if you look at the pictures take a gander at how close the front door hinge is to the wheel well.
There goes the hood you can actually see.

It's true it will get better gas milage and even have more horsepower, but what's going to happen in 10 years when their engine balancer isn't in perfect order and they're trying to do any serious rock crawling and every time the engine revs the whole jeep throws to one side or another like and V engine does (think old caddy or any modern full sized truck when you rev it). I'm just not a fan of the V engine for this type of vehicle. It's a moot point for me though because I hope to have this jeep for as long as I'm alive.
