I just spent last weekend at the Northwoods Jeep Jamboree in Crandon WI. It was the first time I got to wheel with guys in the new JK's. I followed an 07 2dr X on 33" BFG/AT. Fridays trails were very technical. Very tight lots of off camber stuff. With my LJ I had to make many 3 point turns. But this JK did real well, except for his width. He could not make it between many of the obsticles with out serious flare and rock rail rubbing. After seeing this I would never get a JK with painted flares if I was going to wheel it. It made me wonder what they will do with trails now. As more of the JK's show up on trails will they start to widen trails Several times he went between 2 trees right to the mirrors and that was it He had to back out and go around. Now it's only 5-6" wider I believe but it made a difference.
Saturday we had a 4 door. He had a BB with 33's and a winch. I saw him lined up on the trail I was on Friday, the tight one. Well they moved him quickly to our trail. He did OK but the turning radius was real bad. Day 2's trails were more rocks and climbs. He got high entered a few times and some of the rock climbs he couldn't make the approach. The winch is mounted low in the bumper and hit the rocks before the tires did. So he had to go around. All in all it did better then I thought. The coolest part was the guy had his 4 year old son with. The first thing the boy asked the guide was could they use the winch. Well on one of the climbs the last Jeep couldn't make it. So they turned the 4DR Jk around to winch him up. The little guy put on his dads leather gloves and with the trail guides help they spooled out the winch and hooked it up. That kid had the biggest grin watching the winching. I believe that kid will drive a Jeep when he's old enough.
