The problem:
My gas consumption average for city driving has been 14.8 mpg.
My driving habits:
I always start out in 2nd gear and sometimes skip gears as I accelerate.
My test:
I would always start out in 1st and then I'd run through all the gears every time.
The results:
After 1 full tank of gas my mpg went up to 16.1!
Conclusion:
Using all the gears all the time saves gas. Yeah, the takeoff is a little slower using 1st gear but the gas savings is 1.3 mpg. 16.1 mpg is the best I've ever had.

I get 16-18 city regularly (it doesn't really get any better highway). I have the 6spd and use all the gears. I would probably be considered a little conservative on the gas, but i am not holding up traffic. The only down side is a bit more shifting, but I try to keep the RPMs around or below 2k, usually shifting by 2500.
The best mileage I have gotten was almost 19mpg city. I track my mileage religiously (I guess I am a little anal) and I am consistantly between 16 and 18.

I always use all of the gears and always get 13 MPG in city driving.. what am i doing wrong? You're lifted and probably running bigger tires. That will drastically affect your mileage. What is your gear ratio and tire size?

I'm glad some of you can get good gas mileage. I average about 10 mpg everywhere city/highway.

I've always gotten 14.8 mpg with the auto trans. Same. Avg is right around there...less when I spend a lot of time in 4WD, more if most of it is highway, but usually right around 14.8

In my original test it was all city driving. I just got back from my first out of town trip. I drove (close to) the speed limit (55 - 65) the whole way. My ave was 17.47 mpg. Not much better that my city driving.

All stock Unlimited with 5 speed, 13.2 . My XJ with 254k gets the same MPG lifted with 33's. What experience have ya'll had with performance chips?

Everything I've read on all the Jeep forums says that the performance mods are snake oil. This includes chips, intake systems, exhaust, etc. This is coming from guys who have bought this stuff and regret the wasted money.

I saw an improvement after my first oil change - not sure if it was just engine break-in or the switch to synthetic oil...
My worst mileage since I started keeping track (about 2 months in) was 13 mpg (only twice in the last 8 months).
I think it helps that my daily drive is 20 miles with some good stretches with no stops.

I read something awhile ago about adding Acetone to the gas (less than a cup per fill up) and it was supposed to improve gas mileage. I will have to look for the article again. I don't know if I would ever have the cajones to jump acetone into the gas tank of my new rig, but it does say that it increase fuel economy by 3 MPG or so.
