how big of tire can you stuff under the fender before you need a lift kit. and if at anytime you change your wheels and tires to big one's like 33's or 35's or 37's do you have to recalibrate your speedometer. and if yes ,how do you do it.

it's pretty standard that 31x10.5 (bfg AT's are my next set) are the largest you can go stock, but some people go 32's for the mall crawlers. I'm sure they'd fit, but definitely no disco. if 31x10.5 rub in front on full turns, a simple mod of adding washers behind the steer-stop would do the trick.

With enough work, you can squeeze 35's under a stock suspension. One of the Jeep rags ran an article on that topic this year sometime. You just have to trim and bumpstop the crap out of it. Forget about flex.
There is a trend out there to cram big tires under minimal lift. The idea is a lower CG and more stable rig.
All that being said, technically speaking, any larger tire will throw your speedo off some. Its just a matter of how much math you want to do as you drive. I lived with mine for months before finally buying the right gear and correcting the error. With 33's, my speedo was running slow by nearly 10%.

You can find the right gear every place from your local 4x4 shop to your Jeep dealer, to Ebay. All you need to know is what tire size you started with and what the new one is.
Be careful what you wish for. The Rock-Track T-case in the Rubicon is programmable, vs. the gear-driven speedo you have. You have to take it to the dealer and fork over around $100 for the "upgrade". The speedo gear will run you $15-25 and take 10 minutes to swap.
Swapping the gear will be one of the easiest mods you'll ever do.

thanks treeofliberty for the info.this helps now all i have to do is get a 6 inch lift kit, and a set of 37's That would put you in the "serious" class of Jeepers. As my 33's start to show signs of wear, I've been thinking about 35's or bigger, but shy away from the added expense of all the other things that would need beefed up (brakes, steering, axles, etc). Someday...

I've got to say, that even though I don't "plan" to modify my LJ when I get it, I do love reading you guys' tech talk. As an old gear head, it brings back a lot of memories. (built my own austin healey replica, among other projects)
Good to be here.
edit: well, there's the short doors... and the custom bimini top... and the stainless exhaust...
But I'm not going to modify the running gear... I swear...
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
