As a Chicago police officer, my duty weapon is a Sig P226 9mm. Any suggestions for an off-duty/auxillary weapon?
I was thinking a hammerless S&W .38 special, because (a) i have one and (b) they're pretty straightforward and reliable
but just to kick it around, what do you guys carry if you do, and how do you like it? I can only do double action only, no SA or DSA.
I was thinking the Sig 239 .40cal. cause it's small and reliable plus it packs a punch, a few more rounds than the revolver too.
what do you think?

It sounds like you already have all you need.
I have a Russian made Makarov 9X18 that nevers jams and I have out shot friends of mine with $1000 + pistols. I bought it brand new from a gun shop for a whopping $90!

I have a CCW and FFL, and carry a Glock 21 (45 ACP). My wife has a CCW also, and carries the Glock 19 (9mm). I've been around dozens of guys who shoot Glocks, never once finding anybody who wasn't thrilled with them. It's hard to go wrong with a gun that just runs. You can put several hundred rounds through a Glock between cleanings, without any failures. And the striker-fired design means there's no hammer to catch on clothes during a draw from concealment, and each trigger pull is the same. The internal safeties mean that it won't fire until you press the trigger.
Personally, I subscribe to the school of thought that a big bullet is best. Therefore, I think the Glock 36 would be a great carry gun, and I've been attracted to them for some time. It's a single-stack, slim 45, with a 6+1 capacity. It's not quite as small as their subcompacts, and thus fits the hand nicely. The capacity is rather small, but the odds on a protracted gunfight in an off-duty cituation are tiny. Besides, it's got more capacity than a wheelgun.
I'd load it with Corbon 165gr +P. I've run some ballistic experiments on short barreled 45's, and found this round to expand nicely, where the heavier bullets didn't muster enough velocity out of a short barrel to expand reliably.

I'm jealous - my dept won't allow glocks. . . don't ask. I've fired them and like them very much, don't get me wrong, but I would need something I could carry as a replacement primary in case mine gets snatched by the brass after a shooting for their investigation - ours have been known to last over a month Ill grab the list of approved firearms next week and let you know just to hear some feedback.

I think you have what you need in the S&W .38 Spec. I have a Glock 27 subcompact that I use as my carry weapon. It fits perfectly in your hand with the Sherer grip extensions, is super lightweight and very concealable. I have been looking into getting a lightweight hammerless revolver chambered in .357 as something a little more simple and less frightening for my wife who won't touch the automatic. My latest was a gift from my father-in law this Christmas. This Ruger .44 Mag. with 7 1/2" barrel is probably more than you would need.

Wow, I've never heard of a department not allowing Glocks. I'd love to hear the reasoning for that. So they take your service weapon if you were in a shooting, for the investigation. This I can understand. But they expect you to furnish your own backup? What if lightning strikes twice? How many backups do they expect you guys to have? I sure hope this doesn't come out of your pocket. Go with 04's 7" Ruger in an IWB holster. Then your wife will ask if you're happy to see her.

Also, with this piece of information, you definately need something more than a wheelgun as your backup. And you don't want the Glock 36 either, which is of course moot. For the sake of this discussion, what are your most important criteria for the off-duty weapon? Are you willing to sacrifice any of that to have a rig you'd be comfortable with on-duty? What kind of work do you do? SWAT or narcotics would require a different weapon than an administrative or traffic position (although traffic stops are pretty risky). What caliber are you after? This is a serious topic, but fun to discuss.

If you are looking for an automatic, you can't argue with the pure stopping power of a .45 ACP. I used to have a Colt 1991-A1 Compact that was a great carry weapon, and currently have a Springfield Armory full size 1911 that I love. Incidentally if you are willing to fork over the dough, SA makes a great subcompact .45 ACP 1911 with a 3" barrel that I am drooling over presently.
As far as caliber goes, something is better than nothing. If you presnetly have a .38 Spec. that is certainly better than a .22, which is a hell of a lot better that a Leatherman tool. I would look at something chambered in the same caliber as your Duty weapon that you are comforatble shooting. That, in my opinion, is the most important factor in choosing a weapon that when you have to use it, is second nature to use.

i'm not quite sure why my dept. doesn't allow glocks. I would need something that could operate as an alternate duty weapon, a DAO pistol. thanks for the suggestions guys, I think I'm going to head to the range this week and rent a few just to see which I prefer. I'm puttin ~30 away a week so I don't feel it when I have to buy the weapon/mags.
I'll let you know what comes of it

Since your limited to DOA it really does narrow down your choices..I'm not a big fan of a snubby .38 simply for the fact that they aren't terribly accurate past say 5 yards..Now granted I don't know your experiences bro, but if it were me I'd be looking at something very similar to your primary, say perhaps a p228 DOA conversion or a 229(incidentally these things palm really nicely).
My squadron is looking at going to the p220 atm and god I hope they approve it, I'm one of the small arms instructors there and have been pushing for it for a long time...I completely agree with tree when he says bigger is better. I've seen the effect a 115gr. 9mm has on a charging target and I wasn't that thrilled with it, since then I've been beg, borrowing and dang near stealing 45's for my duty weapon.
Ok, I'll step down off the soapbox now..hehe
