My son is visiting for a few days before going off to Army Basic Combat Training. He wants to shoot and go jeepin'. I'm thinking about running Martinez Canyon, to give the ARB's a little exercise. This is a long shot, but there are a couple other Zonies on this board. If anybody would like to go, I'd love the company.
I've run this trail before, a couple times. My best scrapes are from Martinez. 32's or 33's are probably the lower limit, based on some of the rock gardens. Lockers are not necessary, but allow you to skip the bypasses.
There are lots of mines along the way, and the view on top, near the end, is pretty cool. The Luge, also near the end, is quite a pucker experience, but you'll let out a big "whoo hoo!" at the bottom.

One of these days I'll make it down there... It'd have to be in the cooler months, as I'm a big sissy when it comes to hot weather. Anything over 85 degrees and I'm MELTING!!! Have fun out there. Tell your boy thanks for serving.

Where is he going for basic? My son is in Army ROTC in college right now. He got a job on McGregor Range helping out with training those who will be shipped out. He has 3 more years in college then he's off. As nwquad said. Tell your boy thank you for serving. Man I'll miss him when he leaves. He's my best friend, mountain biking buddy, garage cleaner asst., help dad take the top off the jeep guy, piss me off when he does something wrong dude, and make me damn proud for all that he does son.

His destination for BCT/AIT has gone back and forth. I just learned today that he was sworn in and will be going to Fort Knox. I'm jazzed because I can finally meet wilcav when I fly out for my son's graduation. Whooo, hooo!
I'll be sure to pass on the messages. He arrives on Wednesday and we're going to be slinging lead and jeepin.

This ended up being a very fun run, albeit hot (110). Recent summer rains made the trail exciting in spots. One spot in particular gave a few battle scars. Here's a picture of the spot, with somebody else coming down: A rut in the trail pushed everybody into the wall. My results were mostly plastic wounds: Fender flares are overrated anyway. There were other pictures on the local club thread: www.virtualjeepclub.com/showthread.php?t=24475&page=4

I have very minor trail damage. But what I do have, I remember well and each has its own story.
