In October of '06 we drove from Nashville to Moab for the Jeep Jamboree. We stopped and stayed at Vail, CO for about 4 days before heading on over to Moab for the JJ. It was and absolute blast and can't wait to head out west again. Presently the Rubicon JJ is in the cross-hairs. We'll see if the wife can get off work long enough.
I always enjoy looking at other people's trips and pics so I thought I would make a contribution too. Anywhoo, here are some of the pics from the trip:
The wife thought it would be cool to get pics of the state signs but we missed one or 2 of them:
A little fuzzy at 70mph:
We were ahead of schedule and my wife had never seen the St. Louis Arch before so we pulled over and played tourist:
We spent the night in Columbia, MO. We weren't too interested in spending a lot of time in Missouri, Kansas, and eastern CO so we put the pedal down and went about 850 miles on day 2 all the way to Vail.
The mountains don't really start until you get to the west side of Denver. Of course at higher altitudes you get:
We finally made it. The unlimited is plenty comfortable for a cross country trip and would not hesitate to do it again:
When we reached Vail it was still light out so we walked around the town a little bit and called it a night. We were ready to get to the mountains, so the next day we woke up and hit the trail. If you want to take a trip out west and do some exploring I would highly recommend the books by Charles A Wells. We did not have anybody to go wheeling with, and at that time, no winch, so we picked a more scenic trail:
The small Fry:
This was just up around the corner from where the last pic was taken so we had to turn back:
They had some pretty cool houses in the area. I think thats copper:
This was in Vail Village:
Through a local jeep club website out there in Colorado we were able to hook up with somebody to go wheeling with the next day. Hans and his wife were from Wisconsin and had flown in to see their brother. They were going to rent a jeep to see the back country in but found a deal on an old CJ. Both diffs were open so there was a little bit of strapping involved. That was plenty ok with us though, we just loved meeting him and his wife and being able to explore the beautiful country side.
In the higher up elevations there was enough ice to make it interesting. I hardly noticed a problem until I looked back and they were not behind us. I had gone up the hill open and didn't spin a tread. He had pretty new BFG AT's and couldn't do it. I would like to attribute it to driver skill:p :
Even after the ribbing from straping him out of some spots, Hans was nice enough to take a picture of my bald head and my lovely wife:
Pics off the trail, nothing challenging just pretty:
