I'm headed out for the my annual trip with the wife to Colorado. We are leaving July 22nd and will be out there 2 weeks. If anyone else plans on being around the Crested Butte, Lake City, or Ouray area about that time let me know. It would be fun to run some trails with fellow LJ owners. I plan on running many easier scenic trails and some tougher trails like Schofield Pass, Pearl Pass, Black Bear and Poughkeepsie Gulch also. I went in on a pop up camper with some guys at work and we just about have it all fixed up so we plan on camping the whole time. If this sounds like your cup O tea let me know. Travis

If I was staying, I would definitely try to make it. I have never had a chance to make it to any of the western wheeling places. I hear Ouray is awesome and that is where they always seem to do the Colorado Jeep Jamboree. I hear Black Bear is one of the hardest trails out there. If I remember right, when it was rated it said to expect major body damage. Look forward to the pictures!

I have been down Black Bear 5 or 6 times now. The trail is not all that diffcult. The only real place for body damage is coming down the ledges should you happen to lean into the wall. Its just real narrow and tight, gotta becareful. It has to be one of my favorite trails though Travis

I'm jealous. We camped outside of Silverton last July and Black Bear was still snowed in on the Telluride side. Imogene was also snowed in.
Interestingly enough, both those trails had fatalities the summer before. Everybody we talked to in the area loved to tell the tails.
That's my favorite wheelin' spot so far. I love the San Juans.

Travis We camped for about 9 days last summer, just east of Silverton. Here's the view: There was a stream just over the hill from the campsite. The elevation was just under 10,000 feet. It was spetacular. If you are interested, I can give you directions and waypoints. This was dispersed camping, not a formal campsite.

Your right, this area is by far my favorite wheeling area!!! I have been up to the San Juans since I was i car seat. My dad took my mom and I up there when I was 2 and rented a willys CJ-2a to get over to Heart Lake. He ended up sliding off the trail with my mom and I in the Jeep!! He has cool pic of it Ill have to get it and post, turns out he didnt have the hubs locked in . My wife and I got married in Lake City last July and Black Bear and Imogene opened up the last day we were there . In 2001 I finally took my dad over to Heart Lake in my TJ and we caught the big trout he had been looking for. Sorry I can go on forever about this area, hope to meet up with some folks up there. Heres some of the honeymoon pics from last summer Engineer Pass Looking down at Lake Como and Poughkipsie Gulch from Hurricane Pass. Clear Lake at the top of Clear Lake Trail outside of Silverton Poser shots on Cork Screw Gulch
