Last night I decided to take a little path I noticed a couple weeks ago. It is hardly noticeable and right off the main road. It is a little path that goes parallel with a bridge to get on to the island. I've been wanting to see where it went (under the bridge or not) so last night after wing night at my favorite dive I decided to wheel the jeep in to see what I could see. It was already 8-ish so it was pretty dark. The entrance to it was tight, having an electric pole and a ground mounted electric light but there were tire tracks on the other side so I figured it was possible.
There was a small (maybe 10' around) puddle but if you've every been around any marsh that big of a hole can mean certain death, or at least stuck beyond compare. I only had to put one side of the jeep in it (passenger side) and being that there were tracks on the other side I went ahead and assumed it was navigable. I put it in 4 hi and eased on through without any troubles. I did sink into the marsh mud a bit but nothing that caused concern.
I went out a couple hundred feet and realized I wasn't really able to see the trail in the dark with the stock lighting so I turned it around and decided to hit it another day during the sunny parts. On the way back through I felt more confident about the puddle so I didn't bother slowing down. This time it was on the drivers side and I had my window down about 4 inches as I was likely enjoying a cigarette. The first thing I noticed was a larger angle than I recalled going in so I gave it some gas to be sure I wouldn't have to call my friend to come drag me out. Immediately I realized I had mud on my face.
I ended up getting quite a bit of mud on the drivers side which I was quite excited about. Every time I've been off the road with the unlimited since purchase it has been as dry as a bone. Mind you, we don't have too many opportunities here in the Savannah area to get a place to get off road but anytime I leave town it's the first thing I look for. So this was my first mud, even though it was a paltry bit and I was excited. I didn't bother with pictures since it was just a wee bit compared to what I've seen on some rides online but I have one piece of advice for anyone that gets into any saltwater marsh:
The mud stinks. Wash it off asap!
It was a good bit of fun and I plan to explore that little path as soon as time and daylight allows. Maybe next time I'll snap some photos.
...just thought I'd share. Anybody else done any marsh bogging?
