I recently made a new license plate holder for my '06 LJ and thought I would share some pics with you all. The purpose of this mod was to get rid of the bulky license plate bracket and give the Jeep a cleaned look without placing the plate directly on the painted corner panel. Materials used: 1. A piece of 1/4 aluminum sheet metal 2. 4 bolts to replace the original bracket mounts(1/2" longer than stock bolts) 3. 4 1/2" deep nylon spacers with 1/4" hole through center Here is a piece of 1/4" aluminum diamond plate. To match the curve of the rear corner panel I used a piece of 3" pipe as an anvil and bent it with a 5 lb. hammer. Once I test fit it to the rear of the Jeep I used the stock plastic bracket to transfer the mounting holes to the new bracket I'm making. Then I used a wire wheel to scuff the surface so paint will adhere better. 1. Front side. 2. Above. 3.Back side. 4.License plate bent to match and mounting holes transfered and drilled in License plate. (The 4 mounting holes will be the license plate mounts also.) 5. Primered. 6.Painted front. 7. Painted rear. 8. Wife's '00 TJ (stock plastic bracket) on left, my '06 LJ (new bracket) on right.
