Any of you guys who have winches keep them covered when not wheeling? This is something I am considering, because I want to slow down the rust, and keep the rubber connectors from dry rotting. Thx.

I dont cover the winch, but I do have the front licenplate placed over the syn rope to help cut down the sunlight. So far I have had no problems.

I don't cover mine either. I figure it was meant to be out in the weather so thats where it stays.

Just clean the cables every now and then, and they won't get dried out/crack from the dirt on them. I also pull my cable out and clean/oil it once a year. While it's out, I do the same to the drum and the roller fairlead. It's off right now as I'm changing over to my new front bumper. I'm going to wax the paint on the winch while it's off too... I figure it can't hurt.
That's just good preventative maintenance.

They salt the roads here a lot so I use a cover. My rollers are exposed though, so they have rusted.
What do I use to oil the cable?

What do I use to oil the cable? If it's dirty take a heavy rag soaked in diesel/kerosene (wear rubber gloves) and just wipe it down really good. It's a good solvent, and a little goes a long way. Then I take a new heavy rag with a bottle of cheap motor oil and rub a light coat on the cable. Don't use too much, just enough to put a little shine on it.
