My son's stock 1999 Sahara I6, 5 speed started making noise after he took it out of 4 wheel drive from driving on icy streets the other day. It sounded like a whining gear noise, similar to the sound made when backing up only louder. My first thought was the transmission but when I drove it, I was not sure if it was coming from the middle of the jeep or the rear end. The differential was not hot to the touch but I pulled the fill plug and added some gear oil, about a pint and drove it again. Still whined. I then checked the tranny and xcase for fluid and all was fine. Drove it again, backed up fine but when I went forward I soon got a double popping sound. Backed up fine. Forward a little then double pop again. He did say the tranny went through all the gears fine before that, just whined.
Any thoughts? Chain in the xcase slipping? I have never had a to work on a chain driven xcase so I'm not sure what the symptoms would be other than the jeep not moving I suppose.
