I had the same problem. But mine was covered under warranty. It is a real common problem with the Wrangler. Some where in this forum I believe someone listed a link to an on line LJ shop manual. Did you try a search for it? Can't you just buy the part and look under the dash to find it. You most likely have to take the center dash section off to get to the controls. You do that by prying up the vent piece that runs across the whole top of the dash. There are 2 screws under there that hold the top part of the center section of the dash. Then if I remember right you just pull off the piece. Everything is now exposed. Good luck.

There wasn't a diagram of what it looks like or exactly where it is, but this should get you in the right general area. I've posted the "abbreviated" version of this section.
According to the Factory Service Manual:
BLOWER MOTOR RESISTOR DESCRIPTION The blower motor resistor is mounted to the bottom of the heater-A/C housing on the passenger side of the vehicle under the instrument panel. It can be accessed for service by removing the Instrument Panel glove box. (1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. (2) Remove the glove box from the Instrument Panel and unplug the wire harness connector from the blower motor resistor(Refer to 23 - BODY/INSTRUMENT PANEL/GLOVE BOX - REMOVAL). (3) Check for continuity between each of the blower motor switch input terminals of the resistor and the resistor output terminal. In each case there should be continuity. If OK, repair the wire harness circuits between the blower motor switch and the blower motor resistor or blower motor relay as required. If not OK, replace the faulty blower motor resistor. REMOVAL (1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. (2) Remove the glove box from the Instrument Panel(Refer to 23 - BODY/INSTRUMENT PANEL/GLOVE BOX - REMOVAL). (3) Pull out the lock on the blower motor resistor wire harness connector to unlock the connector latch. (4) Depress the latch on the blower motor resistor wire harness connector and unplug the connector from the resistor. (5) Remove the two screws that secure the resistor to the heater-A/C housing. (6) Remove the resistor from the heater-A/C housing. INSTALLATION (1) Position the resistor in the heater-A/C housing (2) Install the retainer screws Tighten the mounting screws to 2.2 N•m (20 in lbs.). (3) Connect the wire harness connector. (4) Install the kick panel. (5) Connect the battery negative cable.
I hope this is helpful. If not, let me know and i'll try and do better.

I can give you the 04 TJ Jeep Wrangler Technical Publication. Its a huge file, when you click on the link wait. Wait a long time. It is PDF format. Once open you need to save it to your local drive. www.jeeplj.com/PDF/2004_Manual.pdf
