Those of you with a larger tire spare, what do you do to make some room for the tire to fit? I finally got my 33 inch tires installed and the spare is too large to fit the bracket on the tailgate. So, I did some checking in the Internet and came across this: www.windrockoffroad.com/PART/TER.STEXT/V/index.htmI'm thinking about buying it but wanted to know what everyone else is doing? Maybe there is a better and cheaper way. Thanks, Ridge

I just bought something very similar from Tomken ( here's a link) Works great - the tire will shake a little since it will not make contact to the little bumpers mounted on the tailgate. I put in some larger rubber bumpers that were pretty cheap. Looks like the Teraflex is a bit cheaper than the Tomken....

Hey thanks Belfast, that's a great idea! I'll have to pick up a few of the black Kongs, cool! Guess I'll go ahead and order the extensions as well.

My 33" tire fits fine. I just had to put some risers in for the brake light.

Will a 32" 11.5" wide BFG on a stock rim fit on the tailgate with out the extension?

My 305's, (33's), didn't want to sit flush until I took off the rubber bumpers on the tailgate. Then it did mount just fine.
However, I have 1st hand experience with my old TJ and mounting an aftermarket wheel & a 33" tire on the stock tire carrier......
It really stressed the tailgate. After about a year, the tailgate was "pulled" out or not sitting flush at the top, (where the latching mechanism is...), and I know it's from wheelin' with it like that, and taggin the rear tire on a ledge or a decline off a mud hill that made the problem worse. I KNOW I could've torn off the tailgate hinges, (or at least the top one was looking pretty sad...), with another 6-8 months of that type of use.
Just keep and eye on it and be aware that the tailgates weren't made for "heavy loads", (ie: larger, heavy tires.)
I am currently for the next 2 weeks, (and no wheelin' trips), am running my 305's on the stock carrier until the Jeeperman arrives.

It flexed enough that when I hit a bump I shattered the back of my hard top. This was with just a 33" spare also, I would say spend the cash and get a heavy duty swingout or bumper and swingout setup. Search out swingouts see what you think. I know they are expensive but its worth it. I built this one for about $200.00. Travis

Will a 32" 11.5" wide BFG on a stock rim fit on the tailgate with out the extension? No (well, not with air in it ;D). It hits the top of the bumper. I have the 32" BFG's and can speak from experience. It can be done, but it is REALLY hard to open/close the tailgate. I have the extension 0 plan on running this setup for a year or so when I will upgrade my bumper to one with a swingout.

Will this work? Getting worried now, Pete

Pete, I punched in your tire size on the calculator and I think you will be okay. It comes out to like a 31x10.5. Travis

I was told that the extensions were not to be used with anything larger than a 33 inch tire. I have to tell you, it rides great and feels extremely secure. I'll keep an eye on it and maybe someday I'll get a new swingout. But this works great for now. Hey wv4x4, how big are the risers you used to extend the brake light and where did you get them? As you can see, my brake light is buried behind the 33 inch tire. Ridge

For the 32" tire, I was able to just buy 4 1" nylon spacers from Home Depot / Lowes. You can find them in the hardware section by the bulk bolts and such - they are in the drawers will all the cool fasteners. The stock bolts that keep the light on are plenty long enough - total cost was about $2. I am not sure if it will be enough for 33" - it barely clears my 32". You may be be able to do 8 spacers (2 on each bolt) but you will need longer bolts.

Travis Thanks Travis, I believe that the tire is a true 31.7 inches by 10.6, do you think I'll be ok? I believe this is the height equivilant to the 32 flotation (just not as wide 11.4 inches width for flotation). Thanks for all of the advice, Pete

I'm jumping in late here, but wanted to echo what RubiRed said. When we bought ours, back in 2004, the dealer had a lifted Unlimited on the lot that we test drove. It had a 4" lift and 33x12.5x15 ProComps. They had the spare mounted to the stock carrier. The effects to the tailgate were horrible. It had peeled away from the body, and rattled loudly, just riding around on pavement. All this from sitting on the lot.
We bought a stock LJ, drove it around the corner to Desert Rat, and bought a 4" lift and 33's. We also bought a Bestop tire carrier, based on the "damage" we witnessed at the dealer.
Obviously, your mileage will vary, and this was a sample size of one. Just keep a close eye on things, because I imagine that's an expensive problem to fix.
