Has anyone change out the factory muffler for an aftermarket one? I would like to find something that gives the Jeep a little bit of a throaty rumble to it, but I don't want to go deaf in the vehicle. A few have been recommended to me. A MagnaFlow, or a Flowmaster. The Flowmaster has a 50 or 60 series, and I think they come in either a 2 or 3 chamber. The 2 chamber is evidently louder than the 3, and the 50 series is louder than the 60 series. Does anyone have any input into this? Thanks for the help. Dave.

My full traction exhaust came with a spin tech that sounds really throaty but is a bit louder than i prefer but is not overly annoying.

LarryB, Did you have to do the whole exhaust system? I think I can get away with just doing the muffler. I really don't want to spend the money on an entire system when it could be spent on better things.

I installed the full traction 6" long arm suspension which required a different exhaust system to clear the 3 link set up. I had a borla on my YJ that sounded pretty nice but both set ups were/are cat back systems. I see no reason why you couldnt just replace the muffler to get that louder throatier sound you are looking for.
Also keep in mind our vehicles have three catalytic converters which i am sure cuts down on the noise a lot no matter which muffler you use. I have heard the spin tech mufflers used on v-8's and they are friggin loud but mine isnt near as loud.

A buddy of mine had a Borla on his YJ and I thought it had a hefty but not deafening noise. He's also really into keeping spreadsheets about his jeeps performance and claims he gets an extra mile to the gallon with it. Couldnt comment on that part though, I can't read his graphs.

I had a Flowmaster 40, (I believe that was the Series...), on my old TJ and it sounded great! It was nice and throaty but, not obnoxious like the Cherry bomb that was being replaced!

I have a Flowmaster Hush Power 2 Muffler with custom exhaust for the 6" Full Traction setup. I think it sounds great and I get alot of comments about how good it sounds.

If you do exhaust work, see if they can tuck things up a little further. I drug my tailpipe all through the rocks last weekend. It seems like there's room to shove that stuff up a little.
Just a random thought...

Hey unlimitedrubi....I listened to the Flowmaster Hush Power 2 on flowmasters web site. It was a good throaty sound, but not too crazy. How different is the sound coming from your jeep from the sound clip on the website? Also what size is your in/out? ....thx www.flowmastermufflers.com/sound.html

I went with a Magnaflow and a custom 2.5 inch cat back system . sounds great and only $150 installed in two hours. I wanted to have a borla system installed at a bigtime dealership, but the aftermarket sales guy said to get it done at this local exhaust pro shop. saved 325 bucks!!! Got the magnaflow muffler I wanted, and he did a good job of tucking the tailpipe up slightly higher and shorter than stock (and no gay chrome tip )

hey, you guys with the custom exhaust systems, are they bigger diameter pipe than what us stock'ers are dealing with? I was just thinking of straight swapping my muffler out too, just for the sound and maybe added mileage.

I just got my hushpower II today. All I did was measure the outer diameter on my existing pipe on my unlimited, which was about 2.10 inches with a digital calibrator. I bought the hushpower II with the 2 inch OD and since its shorter in lenth, I will need to go get some exhaust piping from an auto parts store. I plan to spot weld it, and also add some pipe clamps.

let us know how it sounds, and be sure to note any performance gains (i read about a slight mileage increase). I'm looking for an excuse to get my jeep a gift for when the soft top goes back on

I installed a Banks cat back system on a buddys Unlimited the other day.. Sounded awesome and he said the price was not bad.. Pretty easy to do once you cut the old exhaust pipe off.
Banks also said that thier Exhaust along with a K&N drop filter in provided some pretty decent power increases.. 10-15HP... they claim that the factory air box with a drop in filter actually measures a higher HP increase than removing the factory air box and installing a K&N intake system. This being on the 05-06 models only.
