My bro's car just got brutally broken into - it's making me a little nervous. (although since he already took a chunk out of my hardtop - he kind of deserved it).
anyway - any recommendations on an alarm system? are they easy to install myself, or should I have someone do it (I hate doing that). If anyone's done it, it'd be great to see some pictures of what I'd be doing in order to install a decent alarm.
thanks fellas

I know they have a dealer add-on made escpecially for TJ's. I was looking at this one. My dad has an aftermarket system on his TJ and has had good luck with it.
I am also looking at the available options for security, and for now, I just leave the Jeep empty when we are out nad about, and in the garage whenever possible at home.

FYI - dealer alarm system is almost 800 installed = DOUBT IT. I'll probably get a high tech one at some local place, they quoted me 400 installed with the 2 way long distance transmitters and motion detectors inside. It'll be auto-start, windows down, and keyless entry ready in case I do the power lock/window deal later. any thoughts on disabling the factory sentry key system in favor of an auto start? I'm still debating. in the meantime, here's my temporary alarm system

What's wrong with the alarm system you have. It has everything you need. $800 ain't happening. I didn't know the Stealerhips were asking that much for the Mopar version. I will have to look into the aftermarket stuff.

Yes, give me two, and throw in one of those $500 Mopar keyrings.

I don't trust most car salesman farther than I can throw them. I have the smart key, that helps deter vehicle theft. It may just be cheaper to keep the jeep free from anything worth stealing.

that's what I'm leaning towards doing. it'll give me an excuse to keep the top down (so people can see that there's nothing in there. the only problem is that you can eject the CD's from the player while the car is off. . . oh well. . . i can always burn more right?

Another security product I have been seriously considering is one of the heavy duty lockable consoles for long trips when I want to utilize my CCW permit. I don't like the idea of storing any firepower in the flimsy console.

I am still a rookie...so here goes a possibly dumb question: What is a smart key and how do you know if you have one? Is this an option, standard equipment, or aftermarket for the unlimited?

It will show on the build sheet, or your window sticker as a "Sentry Key Theft Deterrent System", and runs around $295 with the so-called "Security Group" . It is basically a key that has a small chip in it, that your vehicle will not start without. It reduces the chances of your vehicle being stolen without the key in the thieves hand. It doesnt stop the punk down the street from slashing your windows, but it keeps the Jeep in your driveway.

You don't have to disable the sentry key system to have auto start. I have the Viper Alarm/auto start in both my Expedition and my 05 Wrangler Unlimited and still use the sentry key system on both. Both systems were purchased and installed at my local Best Buy.

Yea, I found that out too - I purchased a avital (same as viper) alarm/start system and had it installed with one of those proximity sensors. works great! the prox sensor was installed underneath the handle for the E-brake, but the factory sub interferes with it's sensitivity in the back. I'll probably hook up another one in the back one day, but since I use it as a pickup bed (no backseat), I've got nowhere to mount it and the sensor would probably get beat up and turned into garbage. I'll wait until I start storing stuff back there.
definitely gave me a little piece of mind though, that's for sure.

What's a solid alarm to buy and have someone install? The dealership is charging me $600 to put in, but since they procrastinated - im pissed. I figure just having them credit me and ill get someone else to put it in. Any ideas.

Since we are driving vehicles with removable everything...I would take a trip to your local autoparts store and pick out something that will set off with a change in voltage (interior lights) or when there is a shock (someone climbing in). There are some fancy models that have doppler radar, etc but I don't keep anything in my Jeep worht the price of the alarm.
Since I put in a new stereo, I have invested in a $40 cheapie alarm (Bulldog Security I think.)that goes off when the doors are open, or if someone climbs in the Jeep. Most of the more expensive models include provisions for automatic door locks and windows we have no use for, and given that my Jeep has the Sentry Key, I am not worried about any bells or whistles that disable the starter. I am also getting a hood lock to keep any enterprising would be stereo thieves from just snipping the Positive wire for my alarm.
I bought my alarm from Autozone, and splurged on the $40 model only because it has two key fobs. I installed it myself, and it was not as difficult as I intitially thought it would be. With the extra electrial stuff i am putting on I have been thinking about adding a fuseblock...maybe after one more gadget.
