I am a new jeep owner, and went from cars that sipped the gas, not chugged. I was looking at ways to improve gas mileage and went out and got one of those K&N air filters (not the whole intake system). right off the bat, I didn't notice anything, but on the highway 65mph used to stick around 2000RPM's now it's just about 1850. . . This little difference will add up over time at the pump - a little tip.
anyone with more experience know any way I can save some gas at the pump?

I got one. Drive like you have a egg taped to your gas peddle. So when you start off from a light or something, give it gas like you don't wont to break the egg..

here's a few- remove excess weight = less energy to move it around
use the AC if you have it vs rolling the windows down. If you have the soft top & doors off that's a few mpg right there
keep your tires inflated over 30 psi
only use 87 octane unless you have high performance heads & have changed the compression ratio, otherwise your mileage may be worse then using 87
drive like truckers do, they coast to the next light & take off slow (timing the lights)

Not sure if you are ready for your first oil change yet or not, but I noticed a small improvement after putting in synthetic oil. Not sure if it was just post-break-in mileage or the synthetic, but I went from ~15mpg to ~17mpg. Not a huge difference, but you save the cost of the synthetic over the 5000 miles you drive it.

Yea, I picked up some mobile 1 full synthetic and one of their top of the line oil filters (filters down to 10 microns they say). I already drive like a granny, but I used to get 26 mpg from the volvo when it would run, and now I just want to maximize the efficiency of this 4.0. I'm chilling at 2500 miles now, thinking of changing it early just to get the break in oil out of there. how long do you drive on synthetic oil before changing?

I hate to say this, but we're driving a brick. The drag coefficient is somewhere around .45.
There was a time when I was bothered by the mileage. Then reality kicked me in the teeth. Let's say I could trim as much as an extra 1 MPG from my brick, a highly unlikely event. This would save me about 60 seconds worth of salary per day. Hardly worth the sacrifice.
Your Jeep sucks gas, and always will. Drive your rig and enjoy it, instead of beating yourself up.

Now that I switched to synthetic, I am changing every 5,000-6,000 miles - mostly city driving. As for why is it worth squeezing out an extra mpg - for me it is several things - yea, it saves me $.50/month , but it is reassuring knowing that I am getting the most out of my rig - sounds corny, but its like people spending $500 for +5hp.

I'm now pumping Mobile 1 full synthetic with their ****ing 11 dollar 10 micron oil filter. i know it's over the top, but starting at 6k mi. the dealer is going to be changing my oil for free with only an 8 dollar upgrade to full synthetic (but really, I have no idea what they put in there).
I completely agree with belfast on the "getting the most" argument.
sorry for the segway -
A little tip for those of you who want to make the switch - if you buy a box of 6 quarts it's around 30 bucks. I bought a box + 1 qt. to have one lying around. Next day, I go to walmart to pick up some tire-wet, and they've got mobile 1 full synthetic in a 5qt jug for about 20 bucks. pick up two of them and use an old qt. bottle as your measuring cup - you've just bought highline synthetic oil for only a buck fifty more than castrol. not a bad gig. not that big of a deal, now it's actually cheaper to go synthetic once you figure in the extended intervals.
now I just wish there was a way to upgrade my suspension for the same price as changing my oil.

I changed out my stock air filter for a high performance one (Green Performance Filters). My MPG went from 14.1 MPG mixed driving to 15.2 MPG mixed driving. Well worth the fifty bucks, and it is cloth, so I can clean it periodically, and never have to buy a new one.

Costco has a 6 qt box of Mobil 1 for $25. I'm going to go by and pick a couple up after work. When did you guys do your oil change? It has 980 miles on it right now.

I did my first oil change around 4500. You probably want to wait until you have a good break-in period as I have heard people who had issues with putting in synthetic before the engine was properly broken-in.
Get a good oil filter while you are at it.

Get a good oil filter while you are at it. I was wondering about the break-in thing too. I have heard that synthetic is so slick that it can prevent the engine from breaking in properly.

another tip - I heard that for every 5mph over 60 you do, it costs you on average .20 cents per gallon extra. Not sure if its true {or how accurate his figures are} since it came from some oil industry expert on a news station, but I figure it can't hurt.

I heard close to the same thing a number of years ago, and try to keep it in mind when I am on the highway. (I usually fail). I heard that for every 5 mph over 60mph that you travel you lose 1/2 mpg. Not sure if this was just a vicious rumor, or if it is based in fact, but I do get better milage when I have a whole tank at 65mph on the highway versus 80 mph on the highway.
