My 2004 did not come with side steps, a buddy of mine gave me his stock steps (yeah they help the wife & kids climb on) but not the BOLTS. The dealership told me to use Hex Flange #8 x 1.25 x 25. I bought these at home depot - #8 is way too small.
Does anyone have the correct size?
thanks for the info

Not sure what size they are, but I'll be taking mine off this week to put on my new Jeeperman Trail Skids rocker gaurds. I'll take a look at them and see what they are when I take the factory steps off.

After removing my side steps today, I'd say that they are the 8x1.25x25 bolts. The part they didn't tell you to get where the nut inserts for the frame ("nutserts" are the official term).
I should have taken a picture to show you what I mean, and I suppose I still could, but I'd call the dealer and ask for 8 of those. Looks like you can press them in, or bang them in with a big f'ing hammer. Your best bet would be to get the nutserts and stick them in the freezer overnight (which will shrink them a bit). Take one out at a time and press them in (using a big C-clamp that you can position around the frame rails). If you don't have the clamp, freeze them, grease them, and smack them in place with the hammer. When they thaw out they will be a tight "forced-fit".
Good Luck!!!

So, I pickup the nutserts today at the dealer - get them home and SLIDE them into the holes in the frame, no pounding, no press fit. The bolts thread into the nutserts just fine, but I did not have to press the nutserts into the frame.
The trick is to tighten the sh*t out of them thus pulling the nut into the ridge end of the nutsert, thus burying it into the frame.

I was just "guessing" as to how they went into the frame based on other parts I've put on over the years. Glad they went in easy for you!!!

Thanks for the help. If anyone is interested I bought the bolts at Lowes:Flange bolts: M8-1.25x30mm for $3.02 each and then the nutserts from the dealer, part number 6504397 for $3.25 each.

I will be replacing my drivers side step that saw a little too much trail action. Good to know the size of the bolts that hold it on. I may have to pick up a spare.
Words of advice for the day: If someone tells you that your sidesteps will protect your body on the trail, kick them in the forehead.

FYI, you will need either a nutsert tool, with metric mandrels (available at Carquest, but not Autozone - minus the mandrels...may have to visit a specialty hardware store for those)....or thread the bolt into the nutsert with a large nut between them (the nut should be too large to thread the bolt.) Using and Air ratchet, and a wrench, insert the nutsert into the desired hole in the frame, and ratchet it down while holding the large nut with the wrench. Stop ratcheting when you feel the hutsert starting to expand. It is kind of like baking cookes. If you let up when you think it is done, it is overdone. Let up just before you feel comfortable, and you will be as close to perfect as you can get without the special tool. Once it is expanded, you should be able to back the bolt out with no problems...viola, nutsert inserted. I used this technique putting on my rocker guards and it worked like a charm.

Nut serts can be purchased for a whole lot less than the dealer prices at a good fastener supply house or McMaster Carr. I've used 5/16" and 3/8" in the past. I have the tool for doing the 5/16", but did the 3/8" with the bolt-and-nut method. Just measure the holes in the frame before buying the nut serts.
