Does anyone ever mess with theirs? I've had my Unlimited since March and I've never switched it off. What are the benefits or times where it is better to drive without the O/D engaged?

When towing or just traveling up a long grade and the tranny is constantly switching in and out of OD you would want to turn OD off. By keeping the RPMs up it will help keep the tranny from overheating. You can also use it to slow down if you're traveling down a long grade and save your brakes.

I switch mine off on some of the hilly areas around home, lots of ups and downs and overdrive is always trying to kick in when it shouldn't. Anytime I tow my trailer with my quads, I turn the O/D off until I'm cruising at 60-65mph on the freeway.

Pretty much the same here. I turn it off only when the tranny is doing a lot of shifting up and down, on hills and such. Other than that I pretty much forget about it.

I turn mine off as soon as I start it up. I have found since running 33's that I get better gas mileage without OD.

Thanks everyone. I travel over the Blue Ridge Mountains everyday on my way to work - not huge hills but 4-5 miles of up and down roads - I'll try it with it turned off and see how it does.
How about when off-road and engaged in 4 wheel drive? Does it matter what position the switch is in if I'm already in a lower gear {1st or 2nd} and in 4hi or 4lo?

It only matters if you are traveling dast enough to switch from 3rd to 4th gear. I'd say if you'r blasting around the dunes you should turn it off.

If you're going fast enough in 4wd to hit overdrive...well...slow the "F" down..... Only time I'd hit about 50-55mph would be in 4-Hi on an icy road...and then yes, turn of the O/D.

Thanks - I wasn't sure if it had any effect on switching gears if you were going slower.

I live in the semi-boonies and drive with it off. If I don't there is a lot of shifting. It comes on when I hit the interstate.

mine don't turn on when i start it up,so maybe i should leave it off. So my area is pretty flat i should leave it on. so is it better to have it off for better gas mileage or on

It is better for the MPG to have it on, but it can be a pain in the hills. I usually don't even touch mine...meaning the OD is usually on. Every once in a while I will be in a hilly part of town and switch it off.

so your saying when the light is off the O/D is on, and when the light is on the O/D is off. maybe that's Y I'm getting bad gas mileage. does that make any sense. so the light should be on to get better gas mileage. I'm kinda of confuse now.

you get bad gas mileage because you drive a jeep, or because you're not easy enough on the gas pedal. . . . I'm hovering around 17 mixed city/hwy and I drive conservatively. since i'm just out of the break in period, i've been trying to really work the engine out to make sure the rings and valves are sure seated, also to. . . um . . . have fun. . . . I've been letting it rev higher and I'm happy with the power the engine creates, though dogging the engine in stop and go will give me about 10-12. . . . . . that's a HUGE variable.
you're right, O/D is on by default (light off), you push the button (light on) and O/D is off. turning it off will put your rev's higher thus burning more fuel. there may be some exceptions, but for everyday driving leave it alone for better mileage
