I just wonder how it looks with the doors off. There's still going to be that metal pillar going up the side. Aftermarket companies are going to have to make body armor that that part!!

The front flares look like they came off a trailer.

According to Autoblog they are calling this new one an unlimited as well. Official unveiling is at the New York Auto Show which opens to the public Friday and runs through next Sunday. Anyone close enough to visit and provide pictures?

Yeah, looks like they're offering three trim levels: Unlimited X, Unlimited Sahara, and Unlimited Rubicon. JeepNewsNow is quoting an article that states starting MSRP will be at $21,000.00. I find that number hard to believe, and the article it links to indicates a 2WD model option. The released spec sheet I saw, however, doesn't lists 2WD other than as a "mode" for the transfer case. A 2wd Wrangler? They should name it the Jeep Unthinkable.
I'll take that dollar figure with a grain of salt.
Out of the box, I like what I'm seeing. They kept the essentials: solid axles, open steel tub on frame, coils and added some doodads (some more useful than others, IMO). The powerplant seems a little light in the lower RPM range for torque, but not terribly so.
116" wheelbase is a good length, but they're listing the towing capacity at 3500lbs; I can't help but think a diesel's in the near future for North America (as it will be offered in overseas models).
I wish they offered this in '97, when they should have put the Dakar into production. An extra set of doors would be nice for me, but I'm pretty frickin' happy in my current Unlimited. All in all, I think they did right this time (can't say that for some of the product designs they're pushing these days - the Compass is anything but a Subaru fighter). I think this will be a big seller, especially if they keep it below the $30k mark.

Just off first impressions I don't really like it. I almost think it is too much of a change. I like the back seat and the ability to carry five passengers and I like the way it folds down to extra cargo space, but there is something about it.
Kind of reminds me of those girl SUVs from the 90s, the Rodeo? or was it the Amigo? Anyway, if an H2 and one those SUVs had a baby, that is what it would look like. On the plus side, I think we all are now official owners of collector's items.

Yeah, it'll take some getting used to. I like the specs on it though (not sure about the V6). I'd love to be able to install aftermarket electrically-actuated front disconnects, and I really wish I had a more manageable modular hardtop.
It does look a bit odd with the high-back rear seats and the extended sports bar. Would like a lot better with a lift and 35's. All in all, I think we're going to be seeing these in every other driveway within a couple of years. A lot of people want a Wrangler, but are turned off by the perceived lack of utility and the two doors. On the plus side, our Unlimiteds are the new Scrambler. It's nice to be rare.

I think you are absolutely right about it being in a lot of driveways in the next few years. I am sure it will appeal to alot more people. But those things that held away many of the masses are those things that endear most of us to the Jeep. I have always heard that there is no in between with a Jeep. You love it or hate it and it takes a certain breed to love it. Now with this thing, those short comings are taken away (even the wind noise has to be lower with the curved windshield), Which brings up another question. Should those that purchase the '07 Unlimited be included on this board? (with the exception of brigantine). It is drastically different from our Unlimiteds and seems to share in name alone. I would never turn away anyone (except Rich) but maybe a name change is in order as well. "www.classicwranglerunlimited.com"

I rather like it. It is a definite chage from the TJ or LJ, but not enough to sweat it off. I looks somewhat like the Jeep rescue concept that came out a couple of years ago...that one was pretty cool. Maybe two Unlimiteds in the house? My wife is ready to trade in the other car for another Jeep. I knew there was some reason I love that woman.
