I went in for an oil and air filter on Sunday to my local auto parts store. The guy wants to sell me a K&N reusable air filter for $46.00. It's good for 150K miles. Every 50K+ miles they sell a cleaner kit for 10 bucks. It's not a paper filter so it allows more air through. He says it will improve gas mileage slightly. Anyone tried one of these in their stock air box?

I replaced mine with a K&N drop-in filter. It doesn't do miracles as far as mileage goes - I didn't notice any measurable change. The only real advantage is that the cleaning kit works for several cleanings and over the life of a vehicle it could be cheaper. I clean mine every 20k miles or so - if you drive in dusty areas, it is recommended you change/clean your filter more often.

I use K&N Filters for my quads. Only issue I can see running it on our Jeeps is that when you clean it (if you do it right)... The process takes at least a day. So...you'd need to keep a paper filter around for the cleaning time.
To Clean, you spray their cleaner on the filter and let it set for 15 minutes, then you rinse off in the opposite direction of air flow with low pressure water. Here comes the part that takes time.... You've got to wait for that filter to completely dry. I just let my ATV filters sit for a day or so. Last step is to spray on the oil, and then you're done.
Some folks recommend against this type of filter....but I don't know...I've been happy with them on the quads, and those see a lot more dust, sand, and mud than my Jeep does.

I have the K & N FIPK, with the cone filter. I like it. When I clean mine, I do as the directions say, and when I let it air dry, I clean it at night, and let it dry over night.
Before this I had the drop in. Like Belfast said, it makes it easier because you don't have to replace it, just clean it.

Thanks guys, I may give one a try and I'll save my paper filter as well. That's a good idea to save it. I would have pitched it without ever thinking of that.

I took off my airbox and stuck an AEM dry cone filter (oilless, but cleanable) until I save up for the full AEM bruteforce intake that uses the same filter. $45 or so at Advance.
