I had the Jeep in at the dealership to get some emissions parts replaced, and when they had the rear wheel off, they realized that the rear brake pads were worn out. The Jeep only has 31,000 kms (19000 miles), and the front pads were perfect. I wonder what caused them to wear so easily?
I replaced the pads myself, and it didn't seem like the calipers were sticking or anything. ALthough I feel like taking another look.

Wow! That's extremely unusual. You might want to check your parking brake cable for binding (the whole way under the vehicle). Have you had any acceleration issues? It sounds like your pads were in contact with the rotor all the time. Another way to check this is to measure rotor thickness and compare with the tech manual (to determine wear). You may also have air in the rear lines. As you drive, the air bubbles heat up, expand, and force your pads to the rotor.
Good Luck!

Something has to be wrong. Rear brakes should last twice as long as the fronts. We didn't replace the wifes Liberty brakes till almost 55K. Were both pads worn the same? Or was only one side worn out, meaning only one pad was dragging on the rotor.

Any chance you drove with the parking brake on? That's why mine are worse in the back than the front. I had gotten sick of all of the damn beeping when I pulled the brake, so I disconnected the sensor. Then, when I was out on the trails one day I didn't realize the brake was on and it wasn't even noticeable in 4-low (granted my mileage was even worse than it should have been).
It is so bad now that I don't even bother with the parking brake - I just leave it in gear. I just bought new pads and once the weather warms up, they will be going on.

I didn't feel any drag, although there must have been some, and I know what that would feel like since I have found it in the YJ I used to have, and the VW. I never drive wit the p brake on more than a few feet before I realize.
However, I did early on have the dealership readjust my parking brake since it wasn't working, and it worked ever since. Maybe it was too tight.
Do you ever wish taht you could have gotten a discount on the Jeep in lieu of the warranty, and just be prepared to do the work yourself?
Thanks for all the advice. I'm goign to jack up the jeep soon, and see if there is any drag on the rear wheels. Should there be even a little drag, or none at all?

From what I've seen and heard the Wrangler rear disk brake pads seam to need replacing between 20-30K. I had to replace mine at 22K.

40k and mine are still there...I think I will need to replace them in the next couple of months though...anyone know of any places that have rear discs and rotors? The fronts are easy to find, but the LJ is unusual in that it had front and rear disc. I have not had a lot of luck sourcing these aside from the Stealership...

I haven't had a reason to look, but most 4 wheel disc brake systems don't use the calipers and pads for the parking brake. They have a small set of brake shoes that work on the i.d. part of the rear disc that is like a drum. If it were mine the DC would have done that brake job under warrenty or had to convence me nothing was wrong. Too many of the folks in MWJT have had calliper problems to just dismiss.

I replaced my rears at 48,000 km. The fronts still appear to have about 55%. I do think the rears wear faster for some reason. No air in the lines no dragging handbrake and no excessive braking. My fronts have 62,000 km on them. I should get another 15-20 k. My mustang was the opposite the fronts always wore out faster. The Jeep is alot more fun to drive overall though. I do miss the Power though.
