Found an incredible resource for all things oil (and oil filters, air filters, etc): bobistheoilguy.com/The forums seem to still have some measure of subjective opinion, but for the most part the denizens seem to have injected a fair amount of real-world empirical data in the discussions. Learned quite a bit about oil filters. I've been using Fram filters for twenty years secure in the knowledge that they have a solid reputation. Not so, apparently. Quality assurance seems to be an issue with the Allied Signal -manufactured filters and the materials used aren't quite up to par (cardboard end-caps on the media cartridge) for the price. It's also worth noting that Mopar filters are apparently just repackaged from other manufacturers for more money. Among the other manufacturers is Fram. I just put the Fram TG16 on yesterday with regular oil change, and am re-thinking the filter for the next change. The air filter section is pretty light, but looking at the "white paper" that's published on the site there wasn't a tremendous difference between the air filters tested so it seems less critical. At any rate, it's worth perusing before you change the oil again.

The local parts house here has a display for WIX. On it is a cutaway of a fram and a wix oil filter. After looking at the filter from fram and the one from wix, wix is getting my money until I find something better.

I switched to Mobil 1 synthetic. Because I will run it longer I went with the K&N filters. They are more expensive but all I read on them was good.

I'm sticking with Valvoline DuraBlend for now. Of the blends it apparently has a higher % of synth (30%). I used Valvoline synth on my old Cherokee, but reason that if I keep up with the intervals there's no reason not to use just Dino. I'm using the blend because I'm anal retentive.
The next big question oil-wise for me is what to use in the D44 when I change out to the Rockcrusher cover. Foaming and gear riding qualities seems to be an issue with synthetics from what I gather from that site.

After reading that a while back I ditched fram and am now using Napa Gold 1515 filters. It is the standard ford FL1A and fits the jeep mount and has more capacity. I believe it is manufactured by wix. I run the Mobil1 extended service 10W30 in the engine and Mobil1 ATF in the t-case. I put Royal Purple in the diffs and Redline MTL in the six speed.

Wow, those guys get technical and really know their oil. I didn't know what half their stuff meant but it sounded important. I guess I'm of the school that you change it and all is good. then sometimes bad things happen.

I use mobile1 oil and k&n or mobile1 filters and change at normal intervals. never had black oil yet. if you want to save some dough on good oil, look at walmart v. the auto store. i get a big jug for about 20-22 bucks in chicago. if I bought them by the quart at the auto parts store it'd cost about 35 for all that i'd need. just a thought

Don't forget when you change your rear diff oil, you will need an additive since you have the traclok. Its somewhere in your manual.

I'm assuming the additive is to limit foaming?

Don't forget when you change your rear diff oil, you will need an additive since you have the traclok. Its somewhere in your manual. Most "quality" rear diff oils already have the limited slip modifier in them. I'm using Royal Purple synthetic, and it says on the bottle no additives required for limited slip rear-ends. As far as oil goes, I use Valvoline Durablend 10W-30, and Purolator Pure-1 oil filters. Air filter...just the standard Fram, Purolator, or whatever brand is available...

i have the K and N air filter. Works great...I just clean every so often, and its like new. I have one in the VW, and had one in the YJ. I remember in the YJ,
Changing from oem filter to K and N, meant I could keep the jeep in 3rd gear on a hill I would normally have to go down to 2nd.
I haven't changed the diffs yet. Probably should.

I've used the FL1A several times. It would be nice to know for sure if the check valve and other specs are the same as the ones for DC engines except for the volume. I've also used the Purolator 1 filter.
