Miles per gallon, 06 auto

I bought my 06 unlimited in August of 05. I knew it wouldn't get great gas mileage but we all know that. That being said this is not a post to say it is good or bad either way. This is just a result of my keeping records for over 6 months on fuel purchases.

Data collection method: Fill tank to full each and every time I got gas. Kept the fuel receipts and wrote the odometer reading on the receipt.

Exceptions: I am missing 4 fuel tickets from this time frame.

Amount of data: 51 fill ups, not including the 4 missing tickets.

General notes: I get gas in pretty much the same places all the time. I try to avoid ethanol fuel as much as possible. I drive approximately 55 miles per day to and from work (round trip) and considerably more than that when I have a day off.

General findings (keep in mind this is not completely accurate due to the 10% missing tickets)

Average MPG: 18.21
Avg Miles per tank: 260.549
Avg Days between fills: 4.1
Max miles per tank: 572.0
Total miles: 13,228.0
Total amount spent: 1796.76
Fuel cost per mile: $0.132

Hopefully I will find the missing 5 fuel tickets. They are all from about the same time frame so I think they might be stapled together on my desk or somewhere. If I do locate them I will update this thread with the new information.

I find this sort of thing interesting and thought it might be of some value to someone on here so I figured I'd post.

Oh yes, by the way, everything is stock.

edited on 3.16.06 - added one tank of gas and found one of the missing tickets. Now down to 4 missing fuel receipts.

I don't mind the gas milege. I've always drove suv's and they sucked up the gas. The only difference is, I'm not driving an SUV, I'm driving a jeep, and its never let me down, ever. I've been in some very sticky situations, alone, and its always pulled through. My suv's never did that. Also, wierd as it may be, and I too need to do some calculations, but since I got my lift, and much bigger tires, I can honestly say that I think I'm getting better gas mileage than before. I know a lot of people will dissagree with that statement, but its true. Does anyone know why that is? Bigger tire goes farther than a smaller one during one revolution. I don't know.

I agree about the better gas mileage...I have and 06, 6 speed, 3.73's on 32's. I was getting about 12-13mpg in town. Now I get about 14-15 consistantly.

There's always been the rumor that the unlimiteds (and newer TJ's for that matter) had been designed to run 32's... don't know how much I'd buy into that but there is something about the tire having to make less revolutions and 32's dont tax the jeep like 35's would. i just accept it as the happy grey area.

I'm not good enough with math / torque / stuff like that to really understand how all that works together. I just kind of go on what I can easily understand.

When my jeep gets to around 1/4 tank I fill'er up! Thats about all I know or care to know about www.wranglerunlimited.com/av/fart.gif [/IMG] mileage. Its just gonna depress you everytime you start figuring it out so why start? Carry on!

Honestly mine doesn't depress me at all, I'm quite happy with my results.

With my 04 Sahara (I-6, A/T), I'd get 15 MPG no matter what. Hard top on/off, soft top up/down, A/C on/off, Winter, Summer... Sucked.

This one got 16.5 MPG on the first fill up. I expect that to improve some. Things look hopeful!

Speaking of being geared for larger tires.......I have 31's in the summer, and 29" studded snow tires int eh winter. I expected to get better mileae inteh winter (int eh wees whenthe roads were dry), but seem to get worse milage. Maybe due to the rotating circumference. It seems geared very low now.
