Well its time for a new project. I want to build a light weight tear drop trailer to tow behind the Unlimited. Here is what I am talking about. Something like this . gages-56.com/finish.htmlThey are about 800-1200lbs total weight, and easy to pull. Does anyone have an after market bumper they tow with? I didn't want to get a hitch if possible because they mess up your departure angle. I have a Hansen front bumper and really would prefer to get the matching rear, but they don't have any D.O.T. ratings. I downloaded the installation instructions from Hansen and their bumper looks stronger than a class III hitch. Anyone have any advise?

Most bumper manufacturers won't DOT rate their bumpers for towing. I guess it is about legal BS. The things are sturdy enough to pull a TJ out of the mud, but not enough for a 1800lbs trailer down the street?
I have a Warn rear bumper with hitch that I tow a small trailer with. The only issue is finding a place to hook the safety chains.

Sorry, I'll crawl back under the rock i live in. These things are like Jeep. No 2 are alike. Some guys do put in real small AC units. Most put a power roof vent in the top to draw air through the windows in the doors. Because they are so light weight they make the perfect trailer for camping. I don't want to ruin my gas mileage any worse then it is or I will have to sell the LJ and buy a Vue. But that will only happen if I get my B@LLS removed and start wearing a dress!

I tow an Aliner ~1500 lbs with a jeeperman rear bumber. The only issue I have had is the fact you have to drill another hole in for the pin. After I bought mine I found out you can order the bumper with the receiver set up with the hole on the outside of the bumper instead of the inside. Look at their pictures and it will make sense.

Most of the reason that offroad bumpers arent DOT is because the company has to invest money into getting them DOT approved. Also there is the liability issue. As long as you pick a bumper that doesnt look like it was made from tin foil you should be fine. Also on my last jeep I purchased some frame tie-ins just for the added security.

Thanks for posting that pick of the Rokmen frame tie-ins! I saw those a while back and forgot where they were from. I wanted a little more piece of mind for using my Warn bumper for a recovery point and looks like these will probably be over-kill (which sounds pretty good to me ;D)
