I have owned both vehicles. My 1995 Jeep Wrangler S had the 4cyl, 2.5 liter engine and was tough as nails. Unfortunaely it was stolen and never recovered. It had an automatic transmission and air as well. Deep Green in Color. I now have a 2004 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, Black and its a beautiful vehicle. Comparing the two is tough tho. The 95, in my opinion was a little more sporty looking than the unlimited. However, the unlimited definitely has a more solid ride and I like the extra room. Has anyone else owned a jeep wrangler before owning the unlimited? And if so, what differences do you notice compared to the other. Overall I would say the wrangler unlimited is by far the more superior vehicle, however, once in a while I still miss my YJ. Your thoughts.... Rich

I've never owned another wrangler , but I do have 2 CJ's . I have a CJ5 & a CJ8 , both have smallblock chevy's & auto's . The CJ's are very primitive compared to my LJ

I had a 92 YJ 4.0 with 4.5 inch lift and 33's with 4.11 gears.
I miss it but I don't mis the bumpy ride. I think I just have fond memories of that rig because it was my first new vehicle.
I think the LJ is plusher but has all of the fun of the normal SWB but more practicle.
The 92 YJ was quite a bit quicker though and more sporty to drive.
Being older now, I love the LJ. Now if I could only get the seat not to kill my back.

Yeah, my 1995 had a bumpy ride too. The Unlimited has a much better ride because the wheelbase is longer on it. The Unlimited is quiet compared to the YJ as well. Rich

I own a 1989 wrangler yj. Its for sale since I bought the unlimited in may. In my opinion, there is no comparison. The yj has a 3.5" lift, and 32,s, but the unlimited with the bb and 31's is much more capable. The softer suspension keeps the wheels on the ground much better than the yj, even though the yj had the sway bar removed. The yj was carbureted (4.2l), so obviously the fuel injection is a god send. the unlimited has much more power, even though I had a Holley carb on the YJ. The only thing I would take from the YJ is the round gauge package. I also have the trakloc now, which I did not before, and the lower gearing to of the 6-speed, along with lower axle gears . This makes towing, and crawl easier. Also, the longer wheelbase I thought would hinder ditch crossing, but it doesn't. The unlimited is much more stable on steep climbs, and descents. The unlimited is quieter, rides better, better on fuel, more powerful, and I don't have to plug it in in our Canadian winters. The only complaint I have is with the softop. I had an olympic sports rack on my Yj, and I could fold down the softop without removing the rack. This would not be possible if I had a rack on the unlimited. A small detail though Does anyone want to buy a YJ? ?
