The braking trick works, because a Limited slip Differential is just that, if there is a slight slip, it locks up and releases. If there is major slip, you are well spinning your wheel.
So, by braking, you reduce the slip in the spinning wheel to near the speed of your not spinning wheel and she locks up and pulls for you with the wheel that still has traction.
I learned about this by accidend while selling cars, taking a customer for a test drive in a Porshe in winter. While leaving the snow covered parking lot at low speed, I could hear the LSD crunching in and out, and didn't have an asnwer for the customer who wondered what it was.
My Mgr explained it to us and said if it had been dry and we had powered out of there like we normally do, we would have never noticed it.
It was cool though, since it convinced the customer he didn't want an LSD and I got to drive to Chicago (from madison) to do a dealer exchange. Nice way to spend a day, road triip in a Porshe.
