Pickles, one of our three beagles, left us this morning. He took his last ride in the jeep about 2 weeks ago. He loved going for a ride, even if it was just a trip to get his nails done and get a check up at the vet. He had many health issues, but he was a real trooper! He went within minutes of getting up this morning and is sorely missed. He has a place of honor under a tree in the garden outside the beagle clan's usual stomping grounds inside the fence. He's free now, and our "clan" of 3 beagles is now only 2. Give your jeep animal buddies a hug for him!

Sorry about your loss. Here's a couple pictures of my beagle. When he was a pup on alert the day I picked him up from the animal shelter. Now older and heavier with his best friend.

Those are great pictures. He's a beautiful beagle! They're both good looking dogs. Poor beagles are just so misunderstood by a lot of "previous owners". My youngest, now 3, came to us after having lived at 2 or more previous homes. He lived next door to us and was headed for a shelter because they couldn't deal with him. They require a lot of patience, reminders, and love, but they give so much back! I teach, and I think everything I've learned about working with small children, I've learned from my beagles! Thanks for sharing the pictures!

A funny doggie story. My white dog with all the black spots (Lucy)is a female. She's never had puppies but she mothers everything that comes in the house. I noticed after I had the beagle (Charlie) for 6 or 7 months he was putting on a lot of weight. Everyone who has had a beagle knows they never think they are full and will keep eating if you let them. Anyway, I measure his food everyday so I was at a loss as to why he was gaining so much weight until I noticed Lucy had started getting really skinny. I decided to watch them eat one day and to my suprize Lucy only took a few bites and then stood by her dish and waited until Charlie ate his food then she backed away so he could eat hers. I guess her mothering instint is really strong.
I had to watch her and make her eat her food for about a week to get her back into eating her food. Needless to say Charlie isn't happy about that and is now dropping some weight.

That's funny. We had a similar problem. Pickles, having Cushing's and being the dominant beagle, was eating everyone else's food, too. With 3 of them, we had one dog dish up on one table, one up on the coffee table, and Pickles' dish on the floor. He was a short beagle, and the other two were the taller, longer-legged breed, so they could jump up to get where their food was, but Pickles could only get to his own on the floor!

Sorry to hear about your dog. Been where you are and it is tuff. But you still have to take care of the other two. Mine like a ride in the Jeep up to Dairy Queen for an ice cream cone. The girls always ask "does your dog want a bone?" Then I tell her the ice cream is for them. It always gets a weird look. But so what. One dog licks nice the other bites the top off. We will have to work on that. I have had at least 1 dog my whole life. As long as I can, I will have a dog. Very few things in life return so much for so little.

I'm so sad for your loss Susan. We have three dogs too, and they're getting older, so believe me when I say I share your pain. Boy do they love to go for rides, even though the oldest girl feins helplessness at the tailgate now, because she knows I'm a sucker and will lift her in.
Enjoy the memories and love on your other two.

I have that picture on my desktop with some other pictures, and a friend noticed recently that I got the years wrong. It should have said Sept. 1995-Aug. 2006. I didn't even notice it until she pointed it out! If I try to fix it, I may lose the link. If so, I'll try to fix that, too.
It's now been three weeks, and I guess we're getting on with things. He has a special place in the garden under a shady tree. The other two beagles don't seem to very affected by his absence, but he didn't spend as much time with them the last few months. He was a little more quiet and didn't like to be bothered with their wrestling. I noticed the other day when I came home from work that his voice was missing from the noise I used to hear when I would pull the jeep into the garage. Pickles was the yodeler!

This is Bruce, aka "Buddy" loves the Jeep and I can't keep him out of the water, including mud puddles. He got an escape problem too! He climbs a 6' fence and gets on top off the neighbors shed and you know the rest. Never a dull moment, the wifey getting a rat dog in two weeks, that'll be a combo.

This is Bruce, aka "Buddy" loves the Jeep and I can't keep him out of the water, including mud puddles. I think it's a Lab thing, cause min lab just won't stay out of the water either. We go up to the UP (upper michigan) in January every year. My parents have a place up there that the whole family uses, it's right on the Menomonee river. Anyway, the river is half frozen over, yet Crosby thinks nothing of trying to find an area that isn't frozen over yet... then watching him try to climb out onto the solid ice... It's 10 deg F and he wants to go swimming. That's why my wife calls him the dumb blonde.

I can't believe that I haven't seen this thread yet... We've got The Bullet and The Dumb Blonde... He's a 9yr old yellow lab that thinks swimming, tennis balls, and being on my lap are the only things that matter next to food. She's a 2 yr old retired racing greyhound that thinks that the only thing better than sleeping, is more sleeping. We got her clocked on radar @ 30 mph, yet she only ran 5 races with her best placing as 3rd.
