Hi all, new to the jeep thing. looks like we are buying a new 2005 unlimited but was a little surprise by the wind noise (wistle) around the doors when we took it for a test drive today. Is this normal and just a jeep thing or was this one defective? It was also very windy out to day so that might be part of it. Oh and this was with the hardtop.
Thanks all.

Believe it or not...from what I hear...this is an improvement compared to it's predecessors. That being said...It is what it is.

I don't have the hard top option but I think the best thing to do would be to test drive another hard top model and see if you hear the same sound - but remember, these things are never going to be that quite to begin with though so don't base your decision to buy or not to buy on that!!! Good luck, you came across a great forum for the Unlimiteds, these guys will answer every question you may have!!!

I have a 2005 Unlimited and I do not have the "wind whistle" noise that you discribe.
I think the top may not be installed just right or the pillars aren't adjusted right. Drive another Unlimited and see if there is a difference to you.
EDIT: Silly me, I just re-read your post and see you are talking about a hard top. The post above pretty much sums it up.

Thanks for the info, regardless of the noise we are buying an unlimited, my wife has been wanting one for some time now and life is too short not to enjoy the things that will make you happy. It was just a messy windy day to test drive anything today. The last time we drove one was a nice sunny day which sure made for a great experance. With winter on us it'llbe sometime befor we experance that again.

I've had a few issues like this in the past - and it turns out they were my fault. I will get some wind noise if: - tailgate or doors not closed ALL the way, which surprisingly is easy to do. my jeep is so airtight unless I have a window cracked the thing always half-latches, esp. the tailgate. - you have a CB antenna out in the wind, the vibes of the air rushing past will whistle some times, I never had an issue with the stock antenna.
check those things first, then double check the HT install.
if that doesn't work, put your fan on the lowest setting and at a comfortable temp - that way air won't be sucked out of the car, but pushed eliminating noise. faster you go, the more fan you use. (off topic) this trick works exceptionally well at counteracting the "imploding soft top windows" at Hwy speed as I like to call it. same with clipping the rain gutters to the door surrounds on the sunrider

I failed to mention my problem was solved when I left my wife at home. Just kidding.

I've got the hardtop and consider it relatively quiet. We've had some storms pass through this week with gusts that pushed my vehicular brick around like a feather in the wind while at speed. Pretty quiet.
Of course, I've been driving Jeeps the past twelve years so my frame of reference is a bit skewed.

It also has firmer suspension than the regular tj, doesn't it? Also the regular TJ i took for a spin last month has a 6 speed manual and I fell in love with it, but the unlimited is an automatic and that what my wife has to have to drive, its her jeep really so she gets what she wants. Anyway becasue of the differance in transmissions I think its a harder comparision between the 2.

The suspension won't vary between the auto and 6-speed. The Rubi's might feel a little stiffer, because they're using different springs. However, the LJ is a smoother ride than a SWB TJ, due to the longer wheelbase. Everybody who has owned a TJ agrees that the Unlimited is noticably more pleasant on the road.
After many years driving normal vehicles, I noticed the noise of the Wrangler. Now, after a year of driving the LJ, 90% of the time open, I feel claustrophobic in our Tahoe.

Do you know off the top of your head if the 6th gear has a higher final drive ratio for better MPG, or are the gears just spaced closer together?

The unlimited is also available with a 6 speed transmission. Yes I know that and if it was for me thats what I'd get my lovely wife needs an automatic.
